I am having a problem with the yanmar on my 376 after running under load for about 5 mins the engine will cut back, like it is having trouble getting gas. It will run fine in neutral with no load at any rpm but isnt getting enough fuel in gear. Any suggestions? Also is their a primary fuel filter before the metal racor in the engine compartment or is their only one on the boat? also i am having trouble opening the bowl on the racor, seems that hunter screwed it on a little too tight! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Miles Pincus Las Brisas 1998 Hunter 376

Mike..... Sounds like

you have 2 filters on the 376, the primary (Yanmar on the engine itself) and a secondary (the RACOR)you're having trouble unscrewing. You'll have to check both to make sure neither are clogged. If they are both OK, check the end of the pickup tube in your fuel tank. There is a small screen in the end that was designed to prevent debris from being sucked up into the lines. When this happened to me, I just removed the screen and let the RACOR trap the gunk. Has worked for about 7 years now....

Ditto

I had the same experience this summer in my 376. I changed both filters first and still experienced the power loss under load. When the pick-up tube was pulled it was found to be clogged. I now use a biocide in my disel fuel.

Filter problems

The Racor filter has wrench flats on the bottom of the cartridge. I think they are 5/8" (as I recall) and the engine filter has a ring at the top. You can usually grab this ring with channel locks to get it started and then unscrew by hand. Yanmar paints 'em shut so the first time isn't easy. Be sure to coat the O-ring with a little fuel before you put it back together. Then you get to bleed the injectors (a lot of fun). Your boat is new enough that you probably don't have a problem with the pickup tube so I'd leave that for last. Been there - done that on my 336.

I forgot something

If the tank is full, you might want to check the vent line for blockage (wasp nests, etc). You might be pulling a vacuum in the tank.

Fuel Filter Change

Thanks Steve and Tom for the good information as this might help me someday especially the information on the pickup tube screen. I wanted to mention that usually the filter on the engine stays clean but the Racor catches all the stuff and water. I change the Racor 2 times a year and always have found some water in it. When I change my Racor filter I turn off the in-line valve on the tank (don't forget this important step)and then bleed the filter after installing the new one. I let all the air out until fuel comes out then tighten the bleeder. You probably won't have to bleed the injectors at least I haven't yet on my 340. I have not yet changed the filter on the engine 2 years.

OOO !- Wayne

The filter on the engine (primary) should be done at 100 hours. The sooner you change it, the less chance of breakdown at the most inconvienient time. It's not really a hard job.

Thanks for the warning

Thanks Paul, I have just reached 100 hours on my engine so will change the filter on the engine.

I had the same problem on my 1997 336. It was not the fuel filter. The problem was with the mixing elbow. The raw water line going into the mixing elbow was stopped up right at the entrance. Cleaned it out and no problem ever since.
