Fuel Filter and Yanmar 2GMF Idle Problem

I have a 1984 31' with an old peko fuel filter. I'm going to replace the whole thing including hose. Will the Racor 120 (15gph) fit the job or a bigger one? Is it ok to over size? When we start our engine...it will idle for a while..then start to increase the rpm without moving the throttle. I use the engine cut knob till it almost stalls, then I push it back in. All of the suggestions so far..engine cut off not in full run...over full oil...and fuel return lines have not been the problem. Any suggestions before we pull the engine would help. Thanks

Jake, the Racor 110 has been used by Hunter for

the Yanmar 2 cylinder engines for many years and the 120 has pretty much the same specs for flow and pressure and filtration capability. There is also no reason you could not go up in size to the 200 series if you have the room. I believe these are ~ 8-9" in height. Sorry I can't help with the odd engine behavior.

According to Mac Boring.....

The Yanmanr dealer (MacBoring) pointed me to the Racor R125, 30 micron filter). If that is of help.

Tony, I couldn't find the 125 model. I'm changing

my 110 out for the 120. Is the 125 a new unit? TIA

Fuel Filter and Stalling

At the Yanmar Basic Owner's Seminar, they provide a manual that includes a fuel consumption chart. The 2GM20 has a range from .21 gph @ 1800 rpm to 1.18 gph @ 3600 rpm. I do not believe the answer to your problem to be the size of the primary fuel filter. Last season, I had to replace a solid bronze Perko for a plastic Racor because I could not find a filter element for it. The Racor has a see through bowl which is nice because water is very visible in it. The Operation Manual lists the following Trouble Shooting Items for Irregular running and stalling: Fuel tank vent obstructed Clogged fuel filter (Primary or secondary) Water, dirt, or air in the system Dirty or faulty injectors Faulty governor linkage Defective fuel feed pump Improper valve clearance Defective valve spring Improper Compression Most all of these items would logically cause stalling but not higher rpm. My guess is a faulty governor linkage; or a wild guess that maybe the fuel return line may be clogged forcing more fuel than necessary into the injectors. Have fun.

Injector control

The only way fuel gets into the engine is through the injectors. Since the amount of air is constant for a given RPM when you add more fuel you cause the RPM to increase. So your RPM increase is a fuel increase problem. All the other things on Jeff's list would cause the engine to slow down not speed up. So either an injector is leaking as it warms up and passing more fuel or the governor/high pressure fuel pump is malfunctioning/miss adjusted/has a loose cable. The governor works like the electrical spark distributor on your car ignition system. One pump supplies pulses of high pressure fuel directed at the appropriate injector at the appropriate time. If it is working at all it is most likely working correctly. I'd inspect the control cable while the engine goes through it's RPM increase thing to see if it is somehow moving. Baring that it has to be an injector problem. Unfortunately there is no way to check if it is malfunctioning when warmed up except to have a pro check it out. Let us know what you find out.

The Perko...

thing is basically a water trap, not a filter. Took off the one that was on my H34 ahead of the Racor (a 120 with a 2 mic filter) and found it full of black tar-like gunk. No filter element inside.

Thank you!

Thanks for all the help. I'm trying to get a pro to look at it. He's the only game in town...and he's hard to track down. Go figure! Thanks Again.
