Any guides for fuel burn on a Yanmar 2gm / Hunter 31. I am taking the my new (to me)boat from Seattle to Point Roberts (150 miles)this week end and as it is winter, obviously want to sail but ezxpect quite a bit of motoring. Fuelling may be an issue due to winter hours at the marinas. Any guidelines out there

.75 - 1.0 gph

Vic: I don't know much about your cruising territory. I alway figure about .75 - 1 gph while running the engine at 2800 rpm. You should not run the engine for extended periods of time below 2500. Based on your tank size you will have about 15 hrs of motoring (probably more). If you make 6 knots you have enough fuel for about 1/2 of the trip. If you run your engine at about 2500 you may gain some extended time. You are going to hear from other that their engine runs at .33 - .50 gph, but I personally have never seen this. I would suggest that you take along an additional 5-10 gals. of fuel. If you are going against a tide or flow, you may even consume more fuel (so I would be prepared). These are great boats. I have owned mine since it was new. It is a 1985 hull #585. The only problem we have had with this boat is the compression post, water tank lid leak and a couple of minor leaks. It still has the original ports and seals. We use this boat nearly every weekend from May 1 through late Oct/Nov. every year. Once the weather cools, we usually only make it down about once every 3-4 weeks. We are in the process of selling our H'31 and getting a Hunter Vision 36.

This weekkend? Stay dry.

I don't think it is going to be too pleasant, with rain and all. But I know you gotta go when you gotta go. Stay warm and dry, and hunker down for the trip. Where are you going to stay the night? Or are you going to try to make it in one very long day? Our engine is not the same size, but just for your reference, our 3HM35F gets about 1/2 gph at 2600 rpm, at 5 knots, and 3/4 gph at 3000 rpm at 6-6.5 knot. Diesel engine can foul if operated at long periods under light loads. Most needs to run at approx 60-80% of their max RPM. Having said that, there is a paragraph in the Yanmar engine manual on idle for long periods. I have copied it and attached it here for you.

I really do get about 1/3 gph at 2800-3000 rpm with my H30. Average in waiting for bridges, charging batteries, etc. Of course if motoring, I plan on worse mileage, but it always seems to come out to about 1/3 no matter what I do.

Not sure where this came from, but it sure looks official and may help create a gallons vs. miles range for the 2 GM. Yanmar Engine Fuel Consumption in U.S. Gallons per Hour Model HP 36003400 3200 3000 2800 2400 2GM20 18 1.221.07 .88 .73 .62 .40 2200 .28 .62 .40 .28

Jerry Jugs

Keep about 2-3 filled Jerry Jugs of fuel on board for the trip and re-fill the boat tank as necessary as you go along. Then you will be assured of having clean fuel available for yourself.

A lot depends on...

...just how much wind/waves you have with you or against you, and the rpms you are running at. But here is a general fuel consumption chart that might help with the planning: Yanmar Engine Fuel Consumption in U.S. Gallons per Hour 3600: 1.22 gph 3400: 1.07 3200: .88 3000: .73 2800: .62 2400: .4 2200: .28

Color of Jerry Jugs

Vic: If you decide to buy some jerry jugs, remember to purchase the correct color. Red is for gas, yellow is for diesel. In most cases, it won't make too much difference other than for easier identification, except for one place that I know of, on the Washington State Ferry (WSF). If you try to board a WSF with a red gas jug, empty of full, they will take it away for safety reasons. If you board a WSF with a yellow jug, no problem.

Vic, this time of year I would expect that...

you will have S-SE winds most all of the way, which means little to no motoring time. Depending upon the wind strength I would run with just the jenny. Congrats on your new boat. If it were me I would go up the inside route through Saratoga Pass and the Swinomish Channel. Much more protected this time of the year, plus you have a number of well equipped marinas along the way where you can duck for cover. Everett, Oak Harbor, Laconner, Anacortes, Bellingham, Semiahmoo, etc. Terry P.S. If he is still there say hi to Eric for me. He used to be the yard manager at Semiahmoo.

Go With the Flow

Don't know when this week you're going but since there aren't many more days left I'm assuming it would be around Friday or Saturday. The currents aren't very cooperative. Looking at the currents for, say, Saturday, it ebbs in Puget Sound (Bush Point) From 6:30 AM until 1 PM. If you depart Seattle between these times you can ride the ebb north. Try to get past Edmonds to, say, abeam Possession Point on Whidby (near Norma Beach or Meadowdale) by 1 PM because that's when it starts to flood again and it's a small flood. Stay on the Everett side of the channel for awhile to avoid any back-eddies on Whidby. Distance about 12 miles from Shilshole so leave Shilshole by, say, 11AM. Ride the flood north toward LaConner but it's a short flood. The ebb at Bush Point starts at 3:30 PM so that doesn't give much time - about 2-1/2 hours without a correction factor. Langley is about 14 miles so you could get past Langley. Oak Harbor is about 30 miles so even though you started out with the current with you by the time you're past Langely you're going to be headed again and big time (11.5 feet at Seattle). Sunset for Saturday is 4:44 and dark at 5:57. For Sunday - this is terrible - it ebbs until 1PM so you'll have the current on the nose until you can get past La Conner. You'll be getting to La Conner just about the time it starts to flood again so you'll have the current on the nose all the way through the Swinomish Channel. Once you get to Anacortes, fuel up, then head north again the ebb will start and - you got it, headed again! Arrrgh! Plan B is to bite the bullet and go via Port Townsend. Ride the ebb (2 kts) as long as you can out of Seattle and going up the main channel once it floods try to pick up the back eddies as much as you can: Skunk Bay (below Foulweather Bluff) and all the bays along Indian Island. Stay overnight at Port Townsend. Cross the Strait in the morning and try to get as far as, say, Smith Island by 1 PM (slack at Bush Point is at 1:30 but it'll be a bit different near Smith Island but hopefully not too much). Ride the flood until a bit after 4 PM up Rosario and then get headed after that (another 11-ft tide). Also, there's a small area north of Smith Island where the water can get really lumpy. With the short days we have it looks like you might need more than two days. Weather forcast for the next day at Poulsbo: Wed 12PM: 43F (Wind Chill 37F) Wind SW 12 Rain Wed 2PM: 43F (Wind Chill 36F) Wind SW 13 Rain Wed 4PM: 43F (Wind Chill 36F) Wind S 13 Rain Wed 6PM: 42F (Wind Chill 35F) Wind S 12 Rain Wed 5PM: 43F (Wind Chill 36F) Wind S 13 Rain Wed 11PM: 42F (Wind Chill 38F) Wind S 7 Light rain Thu 5AM: 41F Wind S 2 Rain Thu 11AM: 41F Wind S 1 Rain Thu 5PM: 42F (Wind Chill 38F) Wind S 7 Heavy rain Thu 11PM: 42F (Wind Chill 36F) Wind S 11 Rain There's nothing so bad that there isn't some good - at least this way I don't have to wash the bird poop off the deck. For plastic fuel tanks I'd recommend making sure you get something with UV inhibitors in the plastic otherwise they'll fade. Blitz has some with UV inhibitors. Good luck on your trip! Oh yes - and look at all the southerlies!

Wow

Thanks for all the good info guys. I figured on the head currents but I'm just going to persevere through. I looked at Seattle -Pt Townsend - Anacortes or Flounder bay but decided against it due to being exposed after Pt Townsend. Am doing Seattle - Oak Harbor leaving about 9.30am Friday , OH - Bellingham Saturday, Bellingham - Point Roberts on Sunday. I know it is added distance but I have to drop off and pick up crew at different points due to work commitments. That leaves the only open water N of the San Juans. Hoping for a gennaker run all the way !!!!!!!!! Onmce again thanks for the input.
