Fuel Consumption

I am the new owner on a 1995 Hunter 37.5. I am planning to sail the boat (and motor I'm sure) from Maryland to Lake Champlain ,Vermont. Can anyone tell me what kind of fuel usage I should expect. I realize there are many variables, but the boat has the stock fuel tank (25 gal I think) and the stock 2 bladed prop. What I am concerned about is if the wind is agains me,will I be able to motor from Cape may NJ to NY harbor?

Other direction.

We motored from NY Harbor to Cape May, wind on the nose the entire way. Had the main up a couple of days just to steady the ride. Add to this some pretty large swells that we were beating into. My H37C displaces over 19000 and has a 30hp Yanmar, a new 3YM30. For the four days including pounding in and out of inlets we averaged about 3/4 gal. an hour.

Depends............

On my H376 in S. Cal, I average 1/2 to 3/4 gallon per hour overall. I'm not always running hard however. On a trip back from Catalina once we had 15 kts on the nose and had to get back. On that trip running at 2800-3000 rpm, 2 blade std prop into that slop we averaged 1 gallon per hour. Hope it helps.

Roy: We make trips to the SF bay on a frequent basis. We have a 3JH2E engine (maybe same engine). I think that the boats have similar displacement 16,000 +. Our "average" consumption is .8 GPH. I document the engine hours and fill up each time I refuel and this is a good average number. My rule of thumb is 1 GPH for calculations. It never hurts to have a spare 5-6 gals. aboard (that was gallons).

If Steve Dion tells you to use 1 GPH for calculations...

...then use 1 GPH for calculations. There are a few folks on this web known for accurate info, and Steve is almost always one of them.

Well thank you John!

John: Thank you for the vote of confidence. I constantly hear other say they only burn .25 - .5 GPH but I have never seen fuel consumption this low on any of my vessels. My H'31 with the 2GM20F usually consumed between .75 - 1 GPH. I almost always run the engine at 2800-2900 rpms. This is how Yanmar recommends to run the engine and that is the method that I have used since it was new. Since I got my new boat I started a log and monitor it very closely. That is were my .8 GPH comes from. Much of this motoring is from the Delta to the bay & back. We almost always have a counter current at least one way on these trips.

Plenty of Fueling Spots

Roy, For peace of mind, there are many places to fuel up between Cape May and New York. You can stop at Atlantic City's Absecon Inlet, Barnegat Inlet, Manasquan Inlet, Shark River or Sandy Hook. You might be able to devolop your boat's consumption for the conditions on your trip. Good luck, have a save and enjoyable trip. Mike D

fuel

At Yanmar seminars I've attended I've heard people speak of approx. 1 quart per cylinder per hours. If you have a 3cyl Yanmar in your 37.5 figure 1 gallon per hour and you'll have plenty of reserve.

Don Wilbert - Therapy

I keep a pretty good log on fuel. I've averaged 1.5 gallons per hour over an 11 year period. The Yanmar has been a good engine

which engine? what boat?

Don Wilbert, being an unregistered user it makes it difficult for us to guess what Yanmar specifically is getting such horrible mileage. Certainly you're not talking about at 2GM20F on an H37.5, are you? And if you are, how many RPMs do you consider "cruising speed" on that poor thing? Drop us another hint, or better yet register as a user so we can click on your name and tell what sort of boat you're motoring. Until you do that, the 1.5 GPH figure is fairly useless data.

Agree with Lefty

I have to agree with Lefty. I have a 1992, 37.5 Legend and I burn 3/4 gallon and hour at 24-2600 RPM's on a calm day. I always work with a 1 gallon per hour burn for safety due to the varying condition on the water and I have never had a problem. Now I have to figure out a way to calculate when the head fills up.

I agree

About one gallon an hour maybe slightly more if in heavy seas and against wind. Based on a twenty five gallon tank leaving room for a reserve of five gallons that should give you twenty hour of running time at "cruise" range RPM'S (around 2600 to 2900 rpm's). If I was to make this trip I think I would also carry a five gallon "spare" tank (maybe two tanks/10 gallons)of fuel just in case. The twenty hours assumes you know where you can get fuel at that time frame if not use the "rule of threes" (a third to get there,a third to get back and a third in reserve or in your case two thirds to get there) As I calculate it you may want to get fuel around Brick N.J area just to be on the safe side or use your "spare" fuel if you plan on doing this without stopping. Good Luck, it sounds like a great trip !

Dummy Me !!!

Sorry - A slip of the pen. I meant to say 1.5 hours per gallon( makes a difference ) Therapy is a 375 with a Yanamr 3HM35. Usually cruise at 2600 rpms on flat water 2800 when its bumpy. I am registered........

that makes more sense

For those with newer engines, you can go to the yanmar marine website and find out what your fuel consumption will be at various RPMs. It doesn't matter what prop you have, because fuel consumption is measured in gallons per hour, not miles per hour. (Think about it; the prop may effect your speed, but won't change the consumption rate for a given RPM.) Select the series (for example, my engine is in the JH series) then click on "PDF Overview." Unfortunately, yanmar doesn't include the spec charts on this site for engines no longer in production. URL follows:

I'm missing something

OK, I'm checking the tech specs on the Yanmar site for my 4JH4E engine on my 2007 H44DS, and it shows a consumption of about 2.5 gal/hr at my usual cruising rpm at about 2750. I have never burned nearly that much, more like 1 gal/hr (hard for me to tell exactly as I have a generator that likes to be fed diesel as well). What am I missing here? S/V Breathless h44ds #234
