After a great 8 day sail here in NW FL our final stop before returning to the slip was the fuel dock, when I placed the fuel nozzle into the fill opening the nozzle pinched and broke the chain holding the cap...with the nice slop of the deck the cap was gone in a second.
The good news is the water tank fill cap fits the fuel fill so at least it is covered (tape on the water fill until I find a replacement).
The bad news is the 1" and 1 1/4" caps at the shipstore didn't fit....

Any one know the correct size cap and/or where to get a replacement?

Thanks

And cut the little chain off the new one and place the new cap somewhere in board next time.

While you're at it, cut the chains off all the other ones, too. :)

How can you tell you're not the first skipper to have this happen? :)

Yea....shame on me since it happened to me before on a different boat and I never got around to cutting the chains on this one....they are cut now.

Sorry, I do not understand why you would cut the chain off..
Is it a salt water thing that they get corroded?

Don't know about everybody else, but I cut mine so I don't let the cap hang from the chain where it can fall into the drink when I inevitably break the chain with the fuel nozzle. With the chain cut I place the cap inboard after removing it.

Nope, not at all. Those chain things don't have a lot of strength, and the sheer weight of those heavy plastic caps overstresses them! :)

All humor aside: for the past 50 years, people have been reporting losing their caps when, not if, the chain breaks. No one's bothered to tabulate the reasons, but eventual wear, hitting it with the filler (good idea there), a loosened screw on either end, you name it.

So, what we do is warn people it could, can and does happen, and hope they take the advice.

No doubt the chain is a problem and mine are all disconnected....especially one of them since I still have not found a replacement cap....any ideas out there?

Scott,
I'm not near my boat right now, but isn't that cap for a 1.5" deck pipe? Catalina Direct carries the plastic ones for water, waste, and diesel as well as the entire deck pipe including the steel cap for $35 for diesel. Don't see just the steel cap though.

I know that still doesn't answer your question. If it were me, I'd drop the $10 for a palstic one while looking for a direct replacement.

The 1.25" was too big and the 1" was too small so I can't seem to find the correct replacement ( like the original) so the plastic one from C.D. May be my best bet for now.

Thanks
