A boat yard employee suggested we add an additive to our diesel fuel for the winter, stating that it is beneficial. Does Yanmar (3GM__) recommend or condone this? Any experiences or opinions would be helpful! Thanks!

Biocide only.

Otto: We use biocide in our tank year round. It is the only thing we use and you should follow the instructions. MORE IS NOT BETTER. I think that you only need about 1/4 - 1/2 oz. in 20 gals.

Water & Stabilizer

I use FPPF diesel fuel treatment regularly to disperse any water in the fuel. Water supports the growth of algae; I try to prevent the growth rather than just kill it. Then I use a diesel fuel stabilizer for winter storage. I also use a gas stabilizer in my outboard fuel.

Don't know what Yanmar says, but.....

I use biocide year-round. For the winter storage I put in a "shock" treatment of biocide (that is double the normal amount) and I also add 16oz of Diesel Power Service conditioner for the winter. That amount of conditioner is the normal amount for winter service and the amount of biocide for the "shock" level is specified on the bottle.

Gas stabilizer

For the boat, I top off the tank with diesel and add the recommended amount algaecide. I also add the recommended amount of diesel stabilizer to the tank. I don't save my outboard (dinghy) gas over the winter. I start fresh every year. Each fall I empty the outboard's gas tank into my car's gas tank. Even though oil is mixed in, my mechanic says it will do more good than harm. I usually pour it in then top off my tank with a regular fill of gas.

I have been in the diesel busines for 15 years

FPPF is a well known additive that will remove water from your system. Probably the best thing you can for your fuel is to keep water out. It will reduce the chance of bacteria, Keep your injectors from gettting fouled. It will also keep ice out of your system, which is not a bad thing either.

FOUND THIS INFO

FUEL (BY Curt Morris) Use low sulfur diesel (amber), or red, bought at a marina. It is approx. 38 cetane (flash point for ignition). 45 cetane gives the best engine timing and prevents smoking. ADD Yanmar FPPF 8 Plus cetane improver. 1/4 ounce per gallon. One bottle treats 120 gallons. It raises the cetane level and stops smoking and engine timing problems. ADD Yanmar Biocide Killem (small amount) to treat tank and prevent algae growth. ADD Yanmar FPPF Lubricity 100, 1/8 oz per gallon. A sulfur additive to stabilize fuel and lubricate. ADD Yanmar Diesel Fuel Treatment if 45 degrees F or less to keep diesel fuel fluid. Comments, please!
