I ha'e an Edson pedestal and pedestal guard. The pedestal and the plate through which the guard passes is aluminum. The gaurd, of stainless steel tubing is, well, stainless steel. Some person initially installed the guard so it only comes to the top of the sockets on the cockpit sole, not set down in the sockets. O'er time, the aluminum and stainless ha'e done that nasty thing they always do -- mated -- and it is impossible to mo'e the pedestal guard in the plate. Penetrating oil does not work. Anyone know of a really super penetrant that will separate fused aluminum and stainless? Perhaps a mild acid? Heat is not an option.

this penetrant is supposed to be good

I've heard people swear by AeroKroil. Never used it but you might want to check it out.

Try a larger hammer....

...with a block of wood between. It took that to dislodge mine. Without having seated the guard in the bases, how have you not had water pouring through? P.B.'Blaster' (as seen on T.V.) has worked well for me. It'll sometimes take over night to work....but its good stuff.

Sockets

do not go through the deck so no water goes through. Really don't want to whale away at the pedestal, with our without wood block. Tried large rubber mallet.

Frozen pedastal guard

As Dale has said PB Rust Blaster works great.Should be available at most auto parts stores. Got mine at NAPA. I have used it many times and have seen it do things that other penetrators couldn't. May take over night or two with generous or repeated doses, but it usually works wonders. Good luck

Had to sacrifice mine

Peter, Here's the good news & the bad news: Bad news first: I had to eventually cut mine with a saws-all, notch the inside with the saws-all, take a pipe wrench and literally peel the guard off of the aluminum plate. It didn't take long, but I did end up having to get a new guard. The good news: You can get new guards for a good price from www.cyber-marine.com Their web site is difficult to navigate, but it's worth the extra effort. Check out Navpod's products on this site & you'll find a 1" pedestal guard (no bends, 54" in length) for about $85. Obviously, you'll want to try to use what you've already got, but rest assured that the worst case scenario is that you're never more than $90 away from making this problem go away.
