I have an O'Day 40 with a frozen roller furler. I believe it's a hood.. though see no name on it. How do I dismantle it to have it repaired? Online I've seen a couple similar versions... one has three screws at the bottom of the drum, one has a clamp like thing... I have the 3 screws version.. though there are holes where once I assume there were screws. After viewing a number of youtube videos, I'm thinking a bushing inside the bottom foil may have fallen down inside the mechanism and binding it... though don't know. Taking this apart is somewhat less than intuitive.

That does look like a Hood Furler.

It is better to post photos as JPGs PNGs than as PDFs. PDFs have to be downloaded onto the phone or computer which can be a security risk. JPGs and PNGs will open in a browser and do not take up residence on someone's hard drive.

Thanks Dave. I took the pictures with my camera which creates .heic format pictures.. I found it easier to print to .pdf; I need to get my camera to create .jpg.

By the way.. I raced on a Sabre for years... great boat!

Hey,

the Hood furler was not very good it was new. It hasn’t gotten better over the years. I suggest you bite the bullet and buy a new one. Profurl, Harken, Selden all make very good units.

good luck,
Barry

IIRC, Pompanette in Florida now represents the old Hood line. Maybe contact them for assistance. Good luck.

I would start by separating the lower unit and first 1.5' from the rest of the furler. Take your sail off, unscrew the plastic hex screw 1.5-2' from the bottom. Now pull the camferred cast aluminum piece where the lower portion of the furler meets the rest of the extruded sections. There's two pieces. One will pull straight up and the one with the "dot" an inch below will come out second. I didn't say this would be easy. You'll likely need to hold the rest of the furler up with a halyard somehow after this is done. Now that the two parts are separated, you can figure out if the issue is in the lower unit as you suspect. Theoretically it is possible to rebuild it without removal but it would be extremely difficult. I'm hoping that if service is necessary, that you can support the mast with a forward halyard, undo the forestay, pull the lower unit off, reattach the forestay and work on the lower unit

Double check for halyard wrap at the top and that your furler line isn't bound up on itself in the spool. I've had both of these issues make it feel like it was frozen in place
