I threw together a front hatch screen last night (yes we still have bugs down here). what I'm wondering is how others created screens for the front hatch on the mac's. (and held them in place) I see lots of nice screens for the compainon way... not so much for the bow. I think the bow hatch measured 21" square, and I made mine 22" square. testing this weekend... anyone have a good solution?

Ours and Yours?

We used the self sticking hook side of velco tape on the bottom of the hatch opening and white bridal veil material. What did you use?

screen

I used a standard screen with self stick velcro. I sewed velcro around the edges of both sides of the screen, hook on one side, loop on the other, so that it will hook to itself, and for support when pulling on it. I then put some velcro around the hatch in the cabin. Works great and I can fold it back on itself to keep it open. Chris M25 Chara

Velcro Gives out after awhile.

The original owner of my boat glued velcro strips around the hatch opening. I think this was good for its day, but started to refuse to hold on anymore, so I scraped it all off. Went to Michael's craft store and purchase a sheet of rubber magnet. Cut it to size and glued it in place with gorilla glue. Did the same for the screen. Works well and gives a perfect seal. Originally I experimented with refrigerator door seal, but it was very difficult to get the corners sealed. Tom 1980 MAC25 s/v 'Insagal'

The secret to velcro...

It's all in the brand. Search out genuine "velcro" products that use 3M adhesive. Their industrial strength line will stay on and work for a decade or more. The offshore crap is just that - crap. Same goes for "mounting tape". We use double sided foam or "gel" tape to hold the VHF and heavier items. They can support your weight and not give - much easier and FAR stronger than drilling and using screws. BUT - it has to be 3M brand, particularly the gel version with the red backing. The offshore crap turns to a stickly mess in 6 months. Chris

Chris is right, 3M works. I use fibre glass screen for screen-door from home depot. It won't tear even abused.
