I was planing to sail from New Orleans (LA) to Destin (FL)in Late October. I know Moblie and Gulfshores are in ruins. Is the ICW open to small boat travel? I there anything open between Mobile and Destin? Do you have any suggestions for the trip on the inside and outside? Thank you.

Trip to Destin

Mobile's Marina's faired quite well from Hurricane Ivan. All the marina's and fuel docks are open. The intracoastal from Mobile Bay to Pensacola has re-opened to traffic. I would not plan on getting any fuel or finding a transient slip from Gulf Shores to Pensacola since many of the marina's got hit pretty hard. There are some great places to anchor though. If you plan on going outside I guess it would depend on the size boat you have and the weather.

New Orleans to Destin

You should be able to get anything you need in Gulfport or Pascagoula. You'll probably need to spend the first night in the Rigollettes and hit Gulfport next noon.

Keep us posted

Please let us know how it goes. That's a trip I'd like to make myself.

Be All Set Before You Get Past Biloxi

If need to pull in and are thinking of Pascagoula it is just about as far to Dauphin Island or back to Biloxi.Have not heard anything about how Dauphin Island fared. Finding a slip is going to be tough out here but there are good places to anchor.

Places to anchor

Will, there are many places to anchor, In Al, Ingrams Bayou, Roberts Bayou, In Fla, Big Lagoon Near Pensacola Pass, Little Sabine in Pensacola beach. There is a great crusing guide by Clairborne Young that you may want to purchase if you plan on going through the intracostal "Crusing Guide to the Northern Gulf Coast" I think. As far as Dauphin Island goes, there are no transient slips or fuel docks. It is really not that sailboat friendly. You can anchor in the bay just west of the bridge or on the east end. Be very carefull if you plan on anchoring for the night in Mobile bay. Barges do not always follow the channel. Have a great trip!

With a 34 You'll Have to Go Outside

From Pensacola to Destin, I'm sure you knew that anyway though. I am not sure the water taxi in Destin is running so do not count on that.

Check with the Coast Guard

Many waterways around Pensacola to Navarre Beach are still closed. The waterways are hazardous for sailors because the channels and bottom contours have changed as well as there are many sunken boats in the Intercoastal. This staus is constantly changing, so check with the Coast Guard before you leave.
