From gas to diesel; what needs to be changed?

I have a 1981 C-30 and I want to change my burned out Atomic 4 for Universal's diesel replacement. I am concerned about the necessary conversion requirements regarding the fuel tank and fuel lines, etc... What am I in for in terms of parts and costs, aside from the cost of the engine itself?

Hi Marc, Are you getting the transmisssion? that may be different. Also I would think the prop size and pitch work be different if the working RPM range is lower. My guess is the fuel tank would be fine. In-line fuel filter will have to come out and replace with one for diesel fuel. Your gages may have to change as well. Best of luck. Chris

I just completed this project

Hey Marc, I've got a 1977 C-30 & I am just completing this conversion. I went with the Yanmar 2GM20F, but here's a list of things you should consider: 1. New prop - Larger prop needed for higher torque diesel 2. New fuel lines - You'll also need to fit in a fuel return line. 3. New fuel filters - I recommend a raycor water separator 4. New motor mounts, etc. The Universal is not a true "drop-in" replacement. 5. Modifications to your engine bed will be needed, and you'll need to raise the dinette seat approx. 1.5" to accomodate the higher diesel. Catalina actually sells parts to help with the dinette seat. 6. Existing fuel tank is fine, but you'll need to pump out all gas, wash tank with a few gallons of diesel, pump that out & fill with fresh fuel. 7. Your exhaust, shift cables, etc. should be compatible with the new motor, but you might want to take some measurements just to be safe. All in all, I'm glad I made the jump to diesel. The engines are very reliable, fuel consumption is ridiculously low, and you can expect to get a higher resale when it's time to trade her in. However, I've got to tell you that it's a big project. Expect a few unexpected delays before she's ready to sail. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email at allens@mathworks.com Good luck!
