I am looking for advice on setting up the freshwater tanks for the season to keep the water as fresh as possible. I apologize if this has already been posted but I have been searching and have not been able to find a post. We have the water tanks winterized now and I'm looking for the steps to take to flush them out so that the water will be fresh. I am assuming that the water is not used for drinking, is that a correct assumption? Thank you for any advice. Joanne

Bet you didn't check our archives -

If you do a search there you will find all sorts of posts on this very subject. Have a look, and if there is a further question please fire away. Good luck.

As long as the water tastes good

it is fine. Use it a lot and replenish it often. It will start to taste of the barrel if you start trying to save it.

Sail Magazine

In this month's issue of Sail (April 2006) there is an article starting on page 70 that will answer your question in detail. It's part of a seriers of articles on Spring Commissioning. Drop by your local Barnes & Noble or visit the local library to pick up a copy... you'll be delighted.

Joanne, we have two tanks on our boat...

65 gallon and 85 gallon. I alternate their use for cooking, drinking, washing, etc. The water always tastes and smells fresh and sweet. I did the treatment when we first purchased her from the PO four years ago. Have not had the need since. We use a faucet mount PUR water filter at the galley sink where we filter all the drinking water. The main reason for this is to remove the small amount of particulates that normally accumulate in aluminum tanks. Terry

I did check these archives but must not be using the correct search words. I'll keep looking. I found the sail magazine and read that article - thanks for pointing me in that direction. Thank you to everyone for your advice. Joanne

Joanne, I did an archive search using...

the word "recommissioning" and came up with an article written by Peggie Hall dated 3/31/05. It is exactly what you are looking for. She describes in detail how to prepare your fresh water tank for the season plus other things to consider. Terry
