It depends....

There are several factors to consider: a) will the boat be mostly in the water or on the trailer? b) will you be in fresh water or salt? c) how much do you want to spend? The best bet for all-round use seems to be Micron CSC, although there a lot of people (myself included) who use VC17 and there is a wide variety of other paints, depending on your answer to a). I would suggest that you go through the archives, as this subject has been discussed several times in the past. I would also suggest that you consider a barrier coat before the antifouling, if your boat is going to be in the water most of the time. Good luck! Peter S/V Raven

Wear and Tear

The ablative paints seem to rub off on the bunkers when launching and retrieving. Petit's Trinidad paint seems to be a good compromise to be both rugged and do the job. A couple of new paint additives are on the market this year that specifically fight algae slime that we have in fresh water. Be sure your paint can survive out of the water..... some ablative types cannot. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Bottom Paint

I purchased my 23.5 new in Sep 1995. I've used VC 17 from the beginning. The boat is in fresh water, March thru November then stored indoors during the winter months. I paint the bottom every other year and have had no problems. Bill Jones s/v Wind Dancer
