Are you supposed to add anything to the water in your fresh water tank..I heard something about chlorine tabs. Also, what are you supposed to do to maintain the fresh water tank for safe and clean fresh water. At the moment I have a water filter on the sink faucet is that alone enough?

Chlorine based additives....

Most commercial additives (Aqua Bon, etc.) are chlorine-based and do work. The use of a good filter removes chlorine aftertaste (and any sediment) which may develop.

I wouldn't drink bleach water.

James: There have been several posts about sanitizing your system. I believe that Peggie Hall recommends 1 cup of bleach/ 10 gal of water as a shock treatment. I assume that a very small amount is OK to drink but think that a filter would be better if you are planning on drinking it. There are some other treatments too. I think that someone mentioned Hydrogen Peroxide as a disinfectant. If you are putting city water (not well water) in your tank, there is probably enough clorine in it to kill the bad stuff. We just go to Costco and buy bottled water which isn't any more pure than your tank water but thats what my wife wants and guess what? That is what she gets.

Don't add ANYthing to the tank...

All you need to do is recommission the system annually according to the directions in the article "Fresh Water Maintenance" in the Reference library in the Head Mistress forum.

Peggy is right, but if your water begins to smell

like sulphur, then you need to treat it to kill what's growing in the tank. Adding chlorine is the usual practice, but you then FLUSH the tank afterwards by running the taps, not drinking it.
