Hello,
I am after more advice i am afraid. Being a newcomer to the pleasures of boat ownership, this forum has been a huge help.

The wooden backing plate for the thru hull for my fresh water vent is rotting and needs replacing. Hopefully photo attached. The picture is taken in the anchor locker and the thru hull emerges just below the toe rail in the bows. The thru hull seems to unscrew ok, so i could just take it out, remove the old rotten wood and replace with a new bit of marine plywood(?) with a suitably sized hole in, stick the wood to the fiberglass (how?) and reattach the thru hull.
I was wondering if i should try and do something a bit more permanent. I have not used fiberglass before, so was thinking it might be a nice non-critical place to start.
Any thoughts as to how easy this might be?

Thanks

It really is as easy as removing the old and installing new. Prior to putting the new plate in, it would be good to seal the edges of the plate and the edges of the hole with a good grade of paint or poly resin. Seal both sides and the edges. After that dries, it can be bedded with 4200 sealant or 5200 if you aren't going to be the next person to replace it. While you are there, it would be good to replace that old hose too. The plate could be made of G-10 fiberglass instead of wood and bedded with epoxy paste.. a never rot solution. Should you go with poly or epoxy for the bedding material, it is a good idea to lightly wax the threaded part of the thru-hull so that it can be replaced when the UV finally kills it.
