This weekend I wanted to see if there was access to the fresh water tank. I am curious about any crud buildup, so I wanted to look into the tank and see for myself. Any hints? As a note: I flushed the antifreeze, purged a tank full of 'shocked' water, then purged two additional fills. But I still gotta look and see for myself. Hope you understand. BILLJ

You have to make your own...

...however, please keep in mind I am referencing a Hunter 31. Not sure of your boat model. If we are in the same "boat", your freshwater tank is under the port quarter berth and comes with no access. The top panel is attached to the tank with with a slew of screws and possibly some sort of caulking and/or adhesive. Way too big a job to take it off. Therefore, I drilled three holes in the lid and installed waterproof access ports in each. There is an internal baffle in the tank that runs diagonally from the forward starboard corner of the tank to the aft port corner. From these ports, it is a reasonably simple task to reach in with a toilet brush and scrub the tank.

it will be ugly. Every one I have looked into was. You can make a simple access cover out of aluminum or thick plexiglass. I made mine rectangular so that it fit inside and the screws were put in from the top. You can buy one that is ready made but it will cost.

Any 30' (88-94) have a tip ?

Sorry about that, Guys ... I have a 30' --- 88-94. I should have specified that in the original post. I think the tank is under the vee berth, hidden under that cute little storage box. Patrick, your respones is why I asked ... Until I find out what is there I think I'll use the fresh water for washing and NOT drinking/cooking. Thank you for the confirmation! BILLJ

Crud buildup

Bill, I just replaced the fresh water tank in my 88 H30 a few months ago. I had a small leak in the tank so I took the V berth apart to get it out. I was going to have it arch welded in the spot but when I cut a peek hole in the top( where I was going to add a window) and saw the inside I just ordered a new one. As for a hint I took apart the lockers and the front of the vee berth. There are screws every 3 inches! Just don't try what my first method of attack was because the top is glassed to the hull you need to go throught the front. I want to say the plastic tank was about $200. Now the water taste fine. Thank you for the tip ... I'll keep that handy for replacing the tank. I suspect that replacing is the only/best option. Thanks again. Bill Jaworowski
