I'm a new owner of a 2000 290. The 'fresh' water in my boat has a funky smell/taste. What's the safest way to treat this problem, short of running several 40 gallon tanks of water through the system? I do carry several gallons of bottled water for drinking, but I wouldn't even want to wash dishes or shower with the stuff coming out of the tap.

Sanitize

Gregg, We sanitize our tank periodically. You can buy a commecial product intended for this use. We use Clorox. Our Jabsco pump has a recommendation for the concentration and method. You fill the tank adding the clorox. Run the solution into all of the lines. Let it sit in there for 24 hrs. I use about one ounce per 10 gallons which is a little stronger than what I think they recommend. We do not drink the water and I am more concerned about maintaining the tank in a clean condition. Every fill we put in a few ounces. Also, we have installed a water filter on the hose line to minimize sediment in the tank. We located the filter in our dock box and piped the water in ond out with hose fittings. good luck, Mike D

Time to recommission the system

It usually only needs to be done once a season...in the spring during the rest of recommissioning is the best time. Complete instructions are in the "Fresh Water Maintenance" article in the Head Mistress forum reference library (forum homepage). Adding a little bleach to each fill is a waste of bleach...unless you use enough to make your water smell like a laundry, it's not enough to kill any of the critters, but it is enough to damage aluminum tanks and the rubber parts in your water pump, as well as the innards of your hot water tank (make sure it's off before you begin the recommissioning and stays off till all the bleach has been flushed out of the system,
