Fresh water pump

When I leave my water heater on for more than an hour or so my
fresh water pump starts to energize every 5 seconds and continues
until I turn off the heater and the hot water cools a little. Any ideas
what causes this?

Could be your safety valve venting on the water heater. Springs on valve will sometimes weaken with age. Increased temperature, increased pressure. Check bilge for water or dampness where your safety discharges to.
