Fresh water plumbing

I recently had to replace the infamous grey (polybutylene) tubing on my fresh water system after a rupture in the line. I replaced it with the "new" tubing designed to take the place of the grey stuff. I now have a water hammer effect when I open a faucet. It seems the newer tubing is very stiff and begins to oscillate when the pump is running. Is there any way to damp this problem?? thanks, David

Add an accumulator to the system.

That SHOULD smooth things out again.

Less expensive fix?

The accumulator should work for enough $$$ and space. The same principle used at home many times is a simple 'T' with air in the capped section. Insert a 'T' coupling with a piece of 12" hose pointing up and plugged. This will provide an air buffer and should stop the pulsing. The accumulator is still the preferred method as it has the advantage of reducing pump cycling significantly(see Link).

Accumulator, But...

..if you have a pump designed to work without an accumulator, you may have to replace it. I believe a high-bypass pump will tend to run a lot with an accumulator. At least that is what the Shurflow guy told me after I had installed a small accumulator. I replaced it with another pump that was not high bypass and it was great. One of these days, I'm going to do the same on my 40.5. I think I'll wait for the pump to crater first. Rick D.
