Fresh water leak

I have a bad water leak that only occurs when I (partially) fill the two water tanks and use the water system on my 2005 Catalina 320. It's not coming from the bow and aft regions or the head, so I suspect the galley. What is the most likely place for a galley leak? I've looked everywhere I can through the hatches and drawers. Is there a way to find or fix a leak without tearing the galley apart?

Are you saying the leak only occurs when the tank is partially full and doesn't leak when full? Does it only leak when the pump is running? Do both hot and cold water leak?

Trace the hoses back to the pump and tanks. Leaks in the freshwater system typically form at the connections or at the pump. Less common are cracks in the tank or leaking through the inspection port, which does not seem to be your case.

The tanks and pump are in the aft and forward sections, and the leak is not coming from there. All I can see a puddle on the side of the galley. I'll do some more looking. Thanks.

If you leave the Galley Sink through hull open, Guess what happens when you hit a bow wave?

You will get a spurt of water up , like a Whale or porpoise blows water out.;)

Taste the water, Salt or Fresh ?

I get the leaks when I have not been sailing, but thanks. You must have been in some really big waves.

Not sure if this helps…this is not related to water tank levels. We have a new leak in the galley of our 2003 C36 which I have not researched yet. We have a double sink, and when water drains from the left sink, we get a small puddle on the floor as the water trickles out from behind the wood/drawer insert. The right sink does not leak, so we’re using it exclusively.
I surmise that the hose connected to the left sink drain is either loose or failing in some other way, and the leak is hitting the wood frame near the drawers, etc., and trickling out. I plan to pull the whole assembly apart to address the issue…one of these days.

The solution may be as simple as tightening the nut holding the tailpiece to the sink basket.

danb2k ....I am not familiar with the sink setup on a Catalina 36. My 30' O'Day has a 1-1/2" hose running from the sink to the thru-hull valve. If you have a similar setup you should find out what is leaking ASAP as you don't want that hose to come off a fitting or fail because your bilge pump will not be able to keep up with sea water coming through a 1-1/2" opening under the water.

That's a good call GeorgeC, I will check it out soon. Thanks for the thought.

Close all your thru hulls. Leak when water pump on? Using sink or not? Eliminate all possibilities. Foot pump on my friends leaked we thought it was freshwater system at first...

Not sure if the theory is it is coming from a drain or where that came from, but certainly it is important to check the drain hoses, since a failure could sink the boat. A really good idea to keep the thru hulls closed.

I brushed against my sink drain hose while putting something under the sink, and it started oozing water…it was so rotted ! It looked on the front facing side, but the hose was totally shot.

If not coming from the drain hose, then following the water lines from the a tanks, pump, filters, etc and check every fitting. If no luck there, then you have to start looking for signs of water under cabinets and places you can’t easily follow the lines.

Dont forget the water heater, cockpit shower, etc.

I am a bit perplexed by the idea that it only leaks if the tanks are “partially“ filled….that doesn’t make sense to me.

I could isolate my port and STB tanks….If I wasn’t sure where the leak was, I would probably start with one tank isolated and see if I get the leak. If not, switch to the other tank and see. If it leaks regardless of what tank is used, then it has to be leaking somewhere after the place where the lines come together.
