Fresh water flush

I've recently acquired a boat with two good-sized water tanks. Since I'm not planning on cruising anywhere far away (alas), I have been thinking about converting the aft tank to a freshwater supply to the PHII. I know that you're not a fan of hooking up heads to the domestic water supply, but is there any reason why I shouldn't disconnect the aft tank from the domestic system and run a dedicated suuply line solely to the manual intake pump on the PHII?

Many thanks.

What Stu said...

It's easy...it's VERY inexpensive...and it solves the problem.

If you were to "rededicate" that tank to toilet flushing, it wouldn't be as simple as just taking it "offline" from the rest of the fresh water system. There can't be ANY common plumbing between a flush water tank and the potable water system...so you'd have to install another separate fill for it...even a new vent if the two tanks are manifolded into a single vent. 'Tain't worth it when it's so simple to be able to rinse out the system just by running water down the sink.

I think you're gonna find that you'll use more fresh water than you think you will...if you're faithful about recommissioning the system every spring your water will have no more taste or smell than bottled water, so you won't need it. But if you do find you're not using that tank at all, keep it empty and dry to prevent the tank and the plumbing to/from it from getting skanky from neglect.

Re: What Stu said...

I second Peggy's comment that you will most likely use far more water then you think you wiill ....... enjoy your boat for a while and you'll get a much more realistic idea about lots of things on your boat. When we first got ours we thought a small microwave would make things great, we picked out a great spot for it and went shopping. Did not find the size we wanted so put that off a bit....... Also had our eyes on replacing an old light that had changed over years to a very mellow yellow. We never did get a microwave and have not missed it AND the light is one of our favorite things...it gives a beautiful hue and just makes everything look really warm and inviting.

BTW, we wanted to use fresh water for flushing too and went the route using the head sink to accomplish that. It works pefectly and we have the option of using seawater or fresh. I can't tell you the tecnical details of this but there have been lots of discussions about it here before.......I am sure Peggy or Stu can direct you to those discussions if you are interested.

Take your time, enjoy your new boat!

Ahem....ummmm...Stu....

The link YOU provided does provide excellent information (I provided it, of course it's wonderful!)...but it goes to a discussion on the Catalina 34 site--a truly outstanding site for those who happen to own a 34' Catalina, btw...hosted by Stu...I don't hang on sites that aren't...but here, we kinda like to do our best to steer folks to information available on THIS site! :poke:

Love ya! :D
