It has been rainig heavily the latest days and there is som fresh water comming inn and ending up in the bilge. It seems to be comming inn from the back of the boat, it is not much and I wonder if it is just condens water or a leak some place. Do some of you others know about something simular.

Comments please.

No Water

We have been getting a lot of heavy rain here in Florida because it is our rainy season and my bilge is always dry.
You need to start hunting for a possible leak, you need at least two persons one below in the rear and another person with a water hose top side spraying water in suspected locations that may be the leak point.

Fresh water

With this new H36 I have no leak compared with the old one, the Bilge is always dry and we had also some very bad weather last week-end. I even clean it with high pressure and never got any water in. The only water found came from the fridge when we had hot temperature inside te boat. I also use an air dryer to prevent any moisture.

Some H36 owners have found the leak to be in the high volume bilge pump hose that Hunter was kind of enough to pre-install. If you have a high volume bilge pump read no further. Here is what a friend of mine wrote:
What was happening is that the water was going in the hole where the water is supposed to come out. The lower lip of the hole on both bilge outlets sticks out farther than the top lip. And when you wash the boat the water sluices down the seat and some of it makes its way into the hole and settles in the hose. Eventually after many many washings and rain enough water filled up the hose that when the boat heeled or got rocked hard the water rolled around in the hose and leaked out. And what we found was that the big hose was full of water. So we took off the cover in the cockpit and put a vacuum in the bilge hole and blew out the hose. More than a gallon of water ended up in the bilge.

There's always plenty of reasons for water coming into a boat - enough said there. Now, if the water you talk about is in fact coming from the stern there are a couple of things to check out. If the leak has been around for some time, you may find some "evidence" of its source. On my H386, I had similar problems and found the leak was caused by water gathering along the hull's rub rail (was not caulked), running aft to its lowest spot until it found a place to enter the boat. In my case, this was at the butt joint on the transom. When the hull and top were fitted together they left a caulk gap at the transom which allowed water funneling along the rub rail to enter at this gap in the two halves of the boat. When I found the green slime on the inside of the transom I knew that area was getting damp. I had another person run a hose on the rub rail and sure enough water was soon dripping inside the transom where the hull and top were joined and runnng downhill and forward into the bilge. It's tough finding leaks, but this may be your solution too. Clean up the slime, caulk on the inside and then caulk the rub rail to keep rainwater from gathering inside the rub rail. It doesn't take but a small gap in the hull - top joint for water to find itself inside the boat. Good luck.

I had in my hunter 356 an entry of rain water between the fiber and fuel vent - waste tank vent. Solution: Sikaflex.

check it

Problem solved

I have just found the leak. The lock of one of the haches on the transom losened and in heavy rain the drain around the hach could not get the water away fast enough and it came in trough the loose lock.

Do most of you REALLY have dry bilges on your 36? I always have about an inch or so of water in mine. Is that not normal?

Stern Hatches

I lube the locks on the rear hatches and also take them apart and lube the threads to keep them working nice and easy and freely working.
They do get their share of salt spray from time to time,so I keep them clean from salt buildup and well lubed.
My bilge is mostly dry except when using the AC which drains in the Bilge,I also use a dry vac to keep it dry and lets me know some thing is not leaking.

Re: Stern Hatches

Yes deacm, the bilge should be as dry as possible. I have always dry bilges in my boats so I get a bit paranoid when I find water there.

Seadaddler: What does AC stand for? (I am from norway.)

Deacm,
As I told before the bilge is TOTALY dry, I have no leak and I've cleaned the boat this Week-end with high pressure; I also lube the Hatches with a special Silicon Grease from 3M, it resists to everything and I use it also for my electrical plug and cable terminals.

AC Air Conditioning, used when you have to suffer the hot days on Florida instead of the ice and snow of the northern climates like New York and Canada :D

Problem not solwed.

Of course, I dint think of aircondition. Totally useless in my home waters. Today it has been snowing and I use the Webasto diesel warmer.

By the way my problem is not solwed as I thought. I still hawe water in the bilge, seems as it comming down from the port side. I have now idea from where. Somebody had trouble with windows or handrayls or any other possibillityes for a leak??

I found the leak at last. We had som fine weather and I managed to use a freshwater hose. One of the chainplates for the inner/lower stays (the round ones) had a loose skrew and the water came in. Tightened the skrew and putted on sikaflex.

Can somebody explain how to find leaks with talkum powder?

I also find fresh water in the bilge when it is not raining. It comes from the water heater when it is warmed up, but I cant see were it is dripping but it is definetly comming just when i have the heater running. So now I have to seach more. I think the rest is tightened and rainwater is not comming in.
