Does it require a marine technician to charge the refridge with freon?

With the changes in freon to the more environmentally friendly freon, I would have to say yes. It is important to know what freon is in the unit, what freon is compatible with what is there and then you need to have the proper equipment to charge the system and check for leaks. We had a freind on a Hunter 40.5 with a poor cooling icebox stop by our marina as they were headed South from Oregon to San Diego. We were able to locate a local refrigeration tech. and with$50 and about 2 hour later, they were on their way. No problems since they left.

Proper Charge

You are better off using a refrigeration technician to charge your system. The need to recharge the system should be found and corrected so no more gas escapes. This takes special tools and training to find the leak. Also the law is strict about certain gases and the release of them. Play it safe a spend a few dollars and have the system taken care of properly.
