Are other 356 owners also unable to get freezer temperatures below about 30 degrees without raising the refrigerator section temperatures above 55 degrees, or is there something wrong with my unit? 30 degrees is too high to maintain foods frozen for any length of time, and 55-60 degrees is too high for refrigeration. I would like to know whether I have a warranty problem or whether the unit is just undersized and that is just the way it operates. Thanks for your replies.

Experience with our supercold unit

We had the same problem on our 376 equipped with a supercold AB unit 1.The compressor is located under the starboard settee, there is no way to remove the heat generated. We always use the water-cooling feature even if outside temps are in the 60’s the temp in the settee will be well over 90+. 2.When they drilled the hole in the freezer compartment to bring in the coolant line it was way oversized (1-2 inch diameter) and was not caulked allowing all my cold air to escape. I used some of the expanding insulation in a can to solve that problem. 3.The seal on the freezer door was not thick enough, we would even get condensation around the freezer lid, and I added a thin strip of insulation from Home Depot. 4.We keep our boat on a mooring so we only use the refrigeration on weekends, and it takes lots of juice to get things cold. We found it helpful to start with everything cold. 5.There are drains in the bottom of the units, we “keep a cork” in the and remove any moisture with a cloth at the end of the trip Before we did all this, the system would run constantly and never able to freeze anything, now it runs only once in a while and we have to be careful what we put in the freezer. Good Luck Rregge S/V Allie Kat

Trick

Place a credit card between the sensor and the cold plate. It will change the sensitivity of the thermostat. A very knowledgable person at AB told me this trick.

Plug the drain hole

Ours ran crummy until we made a plug for the drain hole. Now it stays at 20 in the freezer and is real cold in the refrig. Setting is on 4 in each. We also start with everything cold from home, including a couple of blue freezer ices. We use on weekends only and do not let run during the week unless we are at the boat.

Here's what we do....

We have a 2000 320, but thru experience have found that since we have a slip with shore power, we leave on all the time (except for the occasional defrostings). We spend every weekend on the boat, and there's always cold beer when we get there. As I recall, I got this "leave-it-on" tip from this site when we first bought our 320. A drain "plug" came with ours (we didn't have to find a cork). The plug must be in to chill properly. When we first turn it on we set it to "6"-----wait several hours and then turn it down to "3". We keep ice cubes in our freezer and they're always good to go, as well as some frozen food items. When it comes time to defrost (about 3 times a season), we just fill our portable cooler to take home, turn the unit off, pull the plug and leave. When we get back we just need a quick wipe down, and re-insert the plug before we set the temp. Our 'frig works great!----even on the hook or a mooring ball overnight.

Our problem a little different

We picked up our new boat on April 27th and have had a problem ever since. We experience a heavy frosting of the freezer plates within a day or two then a reduction in the performance of the unit. The freezer will not freeze and the fridge side stays warm. In working with the dealer and Hunter it was finally determined that the unit was not properly insulated (to Hunter specs). Hunter has authorized the retro fit of the insulation but I am still waiting foir them to perform the work. We'll see if that is indeed the problem.
