Has anyone replaced the ice box in the Hunter 33 with the top load freezer WAECO CB-40? I am planning on doing this in the Spring. Looking for any tips.

Why???

I am just wondering why and what your unhappy with it. What about the corian top door what will you do. I had a 2001 290 Hunter with the top load chest and it was OK but a pain to put food in and out. I have a Hunter 36 with the front load and we like it being easy to put food in and out much better even though it is small but have a small cooler for some other items, even have a 12 volt cooler which we use sometimes. I guess there some changes I would like to improve for storage in my galley but not the ref. Nick

The molded plastic ice box standard with the new Hunter 33 is large enough to hold a bag of ice, some sandwiches and a couple cans of beer. Having moved up from an'82 Aloha 8.5 with an ice box large enough to lose a small child in we have found the standard fridge and ice box just too small to allow for extended cruising. Having looked at factory installations, I plan to carefully remove the molded lid from the Corian counter top and glue the freezer lid to the under side using 5200. that way the Corian counter top remains in place. I will take pictures.

very interested

Keith, I am very interested in your project. We also find the ice box much too small for any extended cruising. I have considered refitting the trash can area to create a large ice box. Lots of insulation and a drain tapped into the sink drain. We like the fridge and will keep it, but the freezer is just silly. please keep us (me) posted on your project. Thanks J&R

that is exactly what I am referring to. The 3YM30 has perfomed flawlessly since we took delivery of the boat in Oct 2005. Never had any sort of overheating problem.

Keith - overheating

Have you pushed your engine beyond 2800 for an extended period of time. Being on Lake Ontario I'm assuming you motor a short distance out of your marina and hoist sails, which doesn't give the engine any extended motoring. Typically these will overheat between 3200- 3400 ( Yanmar cruising speed) after a period of time. Mine started last spring, bewteen 60 - 70 hours on the engine, after I was motoring for an hour between 3000 - 3200.

over heating

there has been some discussion on these forums regarding this but the gist is that the heat exchanger is too small on engines with serial numbers below E05566. we have cruised for many hours with the engine around 2800 but pushing it to 3000 occasionally without any issues. i haven't had a chance to get to the boat and check the serial number on mine yet. still too cold to worry about it.

Your H33 is an 2008? Yanmar issued the Marine Service Advisory in Oct. '05 stating that they changed to the larger heat exchanger in their production. If you follow the link I have posted previously is more of my story. I've found a ton of posts on this problem and am still trying to find more 33's that are still having this problem. ( found one more so far)

0verheating

Lake Ontario offers lots of opportunity to motor. Last summer we motored from Belleville to Toronto non stop at well above 3000 rpm. No overheating problems. I have heard rumors that Yanmar ships the engines with a wax sealer to prevent corrosion. Your dealer is supposed to run a solvent through the engine to dissolve the wax. If not, the wax slowly dissolves with the heat and deposits in the heat exchanger thus blocking it and resulting in overheating.

you may have the newer heat exchanger in yours as the bulliten came out in Oct. '05. I was refering to Jack who has 2008 in his bio. My boat was originally commissioned by Angus and I bought it 2nd through them last Spring. Don't know if or what they did as far as cleaning out and what anti-freeze they used. I know Lake Ontario, as I did all of my sailing out of Mimico, but assumed most sailors would only do evening and day sails on the weekends, with the occasional trip across the lake or to the 1000 islands.
