Hi Roy...not sure what causes that chatter in the box?!!?

It only made that sound when the key was turned to the starting position (asking the starter to turn over). I only let it chatter for about 10 seconds at a time, but probably tried her 10 times over the course of two days.

Did it chatter just when battery power was on and starter not engauged?

Or did it chatter only when you turned the ignition key to start?

Did you let it chatter for a long time (1 minute may be long)?

That is a good idea! I may try that if that is what happens. I feel pretty good that the thing just quit after 35+ years of devoted service l

The inside was corroded, the points looked reasonable, but something could have corroded and shorted out?!?!??! I think this should fix the problem (keep the fingers crossed), but should it continue to buzz and click...I will start taking things apart...

If you change the regulator, and if it starts buzzing again..

Maybe you can use that buzzing as a troubleshooting monitor?

Start disabling (remove from circuit) or substituting things, til the buzzing stops.
Make sure the circuit is still functional after you bypass or remove a part or it will stop buzzing because the circuit doesnt work anymore..

After the voltage regulator burnt up, did the chatter stop?

Also, look for something in the schematic after the starter relay. Because what caused the chatter (I'm still trying to think of something killing the 12v when the relay is engaged) seems to be connected only when fed power by the starter relay.

Try lifiting the supply wires to the dynastart and turn on ignition and see if chatter stops. Do the same maybe with the alternator. This would cause no load to be drawn to these items. If you still get chatter or a very hot Vreg, then it may still be trying to burn itself up (of course after you put a nice shiny new regulator in).

Another thought.. does the Vreg only do it's job when the motor is spinning? The generator is not making anything to regulate if it isn't spinning, right? So if it is getting hot when the key is not turned to start, then something else is drawing current.

hope this blather helps somewhat..

Hi Roy,

No, the chatter kept going even after the regulator burnt up.

Your last point is a good one Roy...and the rpms jumped to 5K on the tach when I turned the key to the start position which tells me that something was open. It didn't do it every time, but occasionally, the needle would bounce up and then drop back down?!?!?

Any thoughts on that one?
