Has any one had a sailbaot at Freeport TX marina, thinking of using as home port verses Kemah. Just wondering how long it takes you to get past the jetties into the gulf. Also good or bad experiences?

Rusty, just plotting it out, it looks like about 5 miles from the marina to where you are clear of the jetties and in water deep enough to sail in.. Looks like the hurricane gate air gap is 69 feet so that should not be a problem. considerably longer than out of Kemah, but to get to the gulf from Kemah is a long way, as you know. So it is a bit over an hour of motoring from the Freeport marina to the open water. ..
The biggest difference that I would see is that the currents at Freeport will be much stronger because of the little bays and the ICW coming out/in through the cut. Much less current at Clear Lake/Kemah

Have not been to Freeport in many years. Used to go fishing with my uncle at Quintana at the pass before it was dredged for ocean going vessels. Looking on Goggle Earth, it appears that Freeport is definitely a commercial / Fishing port. Maybe not the best port for recreation types. Also, the only place to sail at Freeport is the Gulf. There will be days that you won't be able to sail the Gulf because of weather / sea conditions. If you have the boat at Kemah/Clearwater, at least there is the option of sailing Galveston Bay, if the Gulf is too rough. Also, Kemah / Clearwater is recreation oriented. Many nice marinas, repair facilities, chandleries, sail lofts, restaurants, etc. I would prefer to keep the boat at Kemah---just my opinion.
Thanks . Looks like I will have to make the journey a hour of motoring seems a seems a long time. So that may not work
