free board

From what I understand. Freeboard is from the waterline to the edge of the deck. The more freeboard you have the more the wind has a pushing effect on the side of the boat. Mast head rig is where the forestay is attached to the top of the mast and fractional rig is where the forestay is attached any where below the top of the mast, usually at about 7/8 of the way up. Okay all you nautical engineers feel free to correct me. Shane :)

I can't correct you

You are right. But I might add that freeboard is the "distance" from the waterline to the deck at any given moment. Heeling, sinking, etc. changes the freeboard. And strangely enough (to me) the side of the hull is the topsides.

Topsids confussion

Yes, you often hear "topsides" when what is meant is deck or cabin trunk.

Topsides

As a clarification; bottom is from the water line down, topsides is the exposed hull above the bottom paint or waterline, and the deck relates to the deck and cabin trunk, finally the cockpit refers to the...... cockpit. Many people think that topsides mean above the hull which is actually the deck. Hope this helps everyone

How does chine fit into all of this?

I have several sailing books none mention freeboard or chine maybe I need an intro to sailboat design book to learn how all these relate to each other?

Achine is a Chine(wood boats)

Well finally, "chine" refers to the point on a wood boat where the topsodes(u know, the hull side above water) meets the bottom or waterline. A "hard Chine" refers to a design where the bottom at the waterlne flairs out and connects to the topside at the waterline. Some sailboat hull designs had a very pronounced area that was semi flat in that area. when the boat heeled, it rode on its hard chine area. Now that glass hulls are in, there is no break point or seam joining topside to bottom at the waterline. Clear as mud? Yep, Im probably too old to know aht Im talking bout. Checl with them there Maine folks, they know. Correct me if you can.
