Free boat

Catalina 22 Seattle
My neighbor has a catalina 22 that he is willing to give to me. I thought this would be a great project for my son and me to undertake. I am not sure what year the boat is, but it looked sound from the outside, just needing some heavy duty cleaning and TLC. Well, I took a closer look at it and found that not only was the cockpit full of water, but the cabin was 1/2 full as well. For some reason I think this boat is 1988 or there abouts. Can anyone tell me what kind of problems I may be looking at here ? How much wood is there on the inside of these boats. I live in Seattle and the last registration sticker on the boat is from 2009. The trailer has 2 wheels if that helps, one tire is flat. What questions should I ask of the owner, and what should I be looking for? The price is right, but he is asking for a couple of hundred bucks for the motor, which I believe is a Nissan Marine. Thanks to anyone who can help. Eric

one question that comes to mind, would be to ask him how much he is willing to pay for you to tow it off:D...

the boat shouldnt have ANY structural wood, so as far as the water goes, it can be pumped out and the interior cleaned up.

as for the interior paint, now that it has been soaking for a sufficiently long time, it will begin to peel within a year....

all the upholstery can be considered a total loss...

is all the parts there, the mast, boom, rudder, sails???... what kind of shape are they in?

the one thing that would concern me is if during the extended freezing period we had, and the water in the boat, did anything break because of it.

the motor.... maybe you can negotiate the motor in to tow the boat away... does it run, or is it going to need a 200 dollar tune up... (thats about the minimum charge for a carb cleaning and tune-up)

you are right in that it would be a project, but just because a boat is being given away does NOT mean its free.... it becomes a burden as soon as you say "I do"... or i will, or its a deal... or whatever. find out if the man will pump out the water, fix the tire and clean up the interior.... have him check on getting that upholstery fixed while hes at it.... it should'nt be too long after that, when he just gives it to you, it will be closer to being a free boat:D as it is right now, its only a free project that is wanting your time and dollars, in nearly equal amounts....;)

Since it will be a Father and Son project it will be worth the effort. But like Centerline said....the boom amd mast will be big ticket items if they are missing or damaged. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a another complete boat thats in worse shape for a parts boat. Btw, it the front deck hatch is on the flat deck area (before the cabin slopes up) it is a pre-1986 model. If it's on the sloped area it's a post 86. The year number is in the hull number on the back......close to the end of the number.

Nothing is free, we should all know that by now. Hardware can very expensive very fast, if it is all there I would say "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" and for a couple hundred bucks you best buy the motor too.

I think it is a very early model. There is no hatch on the deck at all. It goes back from the bow and then bumps up at once. There are no numbers on the transom, only a plate on the inside of the transom with a serial # 425.

an open boat is cheaper to fix up than a cabin style... re-bedding all the deck hardware to keep things dry below is really unecessary, and there is no "below" so there is nothing needing your dollars from that area... way cheaper:D

If you want to own a boat, then go find (purchase) one that's in serviceable condition and go sailing in it; frequently. People give away boats, or abandon them, when they cost more to bring up to condition than it's worth doing oneself, or paying for to have done.

All the value is in the sails/rigging, motor and trailer in a sailboat this size. Even if the hull is sound it can cost more than buying a well kept boat in the long run.
