The long, fixed ports on the deckhouse came with white plastic outside frames which have cracked at the corners over the years and one of which was partially destroyed during a windy racing tack by a misplaced rail meat foot. I'd prefer to replace them with something cleaner. Has anyone devised a good solution for that?

No frames

I've attached a photo of my 1987 285 taken the first year I had her which was about 4+ years ago. She looks a bit different now, the cabin stripes are gone and the hand rail was replaced, but the fixed ports you refer to are still the same. As you can see there are no frames. It's just the smoked plexiglass window screwed into the cabin top with caulking on the indside and all around. This is the way I found her and the way I've seen most 285s. So it may be that your frames were something "extra" done by the previous owner?

They had frames.

The original boat had frames. There is a guy in Corona, CA. that will make replacement ports for these boats. His company is Mark Plastics. His process had the frame and the window bonded into a single unit that is a much cleaner look. He makes them for many other brands of boats too. Mark @ Mark Plastics 909/735-7705

Thanks, Bob

No, I'm afraid it's original equipment. Mine is a 1985 and the plexi is bonded with adhesive to a raised lip on the deckhouse. Stands about 1/4" out from the surface. The whole mess is then covered with the frame.

re: Mark Plastics

Will contact them. On mine, the plexi is fine, just the frames. Also on mine, the frame is not attached to the plexi. Do they just do the frames?

Replacement Fixed Portlight rames

On my 1986 28.5, the white plastic frame is separate from the fixed portlight and seems to be only cosmetic trim. When it has broken or chipped,I try to find and keep the pieces and glue them back together with Superglue. After 18 seasons, I'd like to replace them myself, so if you find an acceptable replacement, please let me know as well.
