My 20+ year old Evinrude 6hp outboard has finally died for good. I am in the market for a new 4 stroke for my 1982 Catalina 22. I would appreciate any firsthand advice on horsepower and manufacturer anyone could provide. The 4 strokes are definitely heavier which is a concern.

I have the 5 hp nissan it pushes the boat at or nearly hull speed at half throttle and is one stingy motor with fuel. It does weight in at 59lbs. I've seen several ads saying 55 lbs. but the paper work with mine says 59 (long shaft) If I had it to do over I would make the same choice! quiet, clean and just all around very good proformer.

I bought a 4 HP Yamaha a couple years ago. I love it, but I think the Nissan 5 or 6 would be a better choice. David

Shaft length

I have the motor mount that extends nearly to the water in the down position. If I buy the Nissan 5hp, should I get the short or long shaft?

GEt a long shaft

The trouble with putting the motor mount all the way down is that you then have to pull it all the way up again. We had a Honda 8hp (82lbs) and it was a tough pull getting that baby out of the water, reaching through the stern rail, etc. I switched out my old motor mount for a new one with two springs which helped. FYI I ended up selling the Honda and I'm getting a 3.5hp 2-stroke which weighs 25lbs and is plenty for our lake.

Check this dealer before buying

Last year I purchased a Nissan 6hp/4stroke w/ 20" shaft for my 22 catalina. I sail on the great south bay on long island am I'm very happy with the engine. Check w/ ITG marine at www.Marine-Outboards.com or 1-800-321-1902. They are located in Tennesse an shipped the motor via UPS in about a week. They beat any price I cold find, $1244.00 delivered, and it comes with a new fuel tank and fuel line. Great on gas and good for this boat.

Tohatsu/Nissan outboards

I purchased my outboard through http://www.onlineoutboards.com and they were awesome! They are the same company as ITG you mentioned above but I find the Online Outboards website to be more informative. I spoke to a Chris (?) and he was very helpful. I definately recommend going to these guys as I shopped around for nearly a month and they have the absolute best price anywhere on Nissan and Tohatsu outboards. Mention this website to them and you might get some $ off, I told him I was referred and he gave me a few bucks off.
