Found in a locker looks like a boom vang?

When rooting through a locker in the salon, I found a brand new piece of heavy braided line with two sheave blocks on both ends but one has a piece of wire about 2' long attached to the block as if you would clip it somewhere to move the block away from the anchoring point. It looks like something shipped with the boat but I am not sure what it is for. There is a dinghy that mounts somehow to the stern ( the PO did not know how it worked) so that is my next place to look.
Any ideas?

It's possible

If that was for a vang there would be other signs. There would be a mounting point at the base of the mast and another on the boom. Also, if it was a vang then either one of the blocks on it would have a cam cleat or there would be space in your deck organizers for a line to go back to a rope clutch on the cabin top?

There is already a line boom vang with much lighter line though it is too short to run back to the cockpit as I intend to do before spring. This was what I though of immediately other than than the piece of wire attached. Will look at the wire to see if I can find a matching clip somewhere for the end of it.

Preventer.
Jack, interesting thought. This would typically connect out closer to the end of the boom generally, right? I know I have seen somewhere a block set off from the mounting point with a wire like this but cannot remember where. I will look for a spot to connect this to the boom to see if that is it. FWIW, this does not look like it has ever been used.

Thanks for the idea, Dan

Solid vang tensioner

Dan, I was just looking at ads on Yachtworld, there was exactly what you described being used to tension a solid vang on a 2006 Hunter 31. Block and tackle with a wire pendant on one of the blocks. The wire pendant was connected to the boom, the other block to a loop at the base of the mast.

Craig, I looked up yacht world and did a search finding that picture, thanks. My boat doesn't have a solid vang so I wonder if it is somehow an optional item. Going two the boat over the weekend so I will see if it will fit as far as mounting hardware goes.

Does anybody know why the pendant would be on there rather than just extending the distance between the blocks?

Thanks, Dan

Long shot, but 'tack' attachment for an asymmetrical chute?
Brian
Brian, I would love to have an asymmetrical chute but do not nor do I have the winches for one. That doesn't preclude the factory/dealer/Previous owner from leaving this in the boat I suppose, I just wish they had left a chute and winches!

Does the tack attachment for these sails sometimes have a wire pendant on them? Wondering if this is where I have seen this now...

Dan,
You usually see the tack at a height just above the top of the pulpit, so a short wire pendant with a multi purchase block system to tweak the height a tad would not not be atypical. So, spin tack, previously mentioned vang, gybe preventer, dinghy davits come-along are all good possibilities.

It may be the innards to the boom out haul which has a wire and a pair of pulleys .
