I've had little luck keeping my prop painted but if the water is warm it is easy to clean. It is mostly barnacles and they scrape off easily with a dive knife. I usually use one of those nylon scrub pads to finish the job. A friend epoxy painted his prop and then used antifouling paint. He said this method lasted for at least a couple of years. Next time I have my prop out of the water I'll probably try epoxy and one of the non-stick paints. It is amazing how much effect a few barnacles will have on performance!!!
I have bronze shaft and prop on my Hunter 28.5. I sanded them down to bare metal, spray painted them with 2 coats of Interlux Primocon, and then put on two coats of West Marine hard modified epoxy bottom paint. Seems to work well.
