In 2001, I replaced the original rudder on my H33 with a Foss Foam. Today I discovered (on the hard) that it is delaminating, deformed, and would have surely failed had it gone unnoticed. Has anybody had any similar incidents?

Yup

Had a Foss rudder fail after 2-3 years and Al Walker at foss said "pull it off and send it to me". Al determined it wasn't his problems and sold me another new one "wholesale" (over $1000 by the time I got it) If I had to do it over I'd rebuild it myself before dealing with Foss again. You can't win because the design is marginal at best on many models. I don't miss my Hunter!

Let us know. . .

what Foss tells you Adam. My 1979 rudder is original and solid. So I have to think you got a "Monday" rudder. Those rudders are all over the world and have nothing to do with Hunters. I, too, am glad that Daryl got rid of his Hunter. Now if he would just go over to the website of his own brand of boat. :)

Hey Ed ....

Good thing you answered this post and told us you have no experience dealing with Foss Foam. That's what forums like this are for. It allow you to share with everyone your how much you don't know. I wasn't aware that people who didn't share your opinion shouldn't post here.

Daryl's new boat

Daryl, I was curious as to which make and model boat you now own? I am always interested in which boat a person owns and why it fits his particular needs. Thanks, gerald

Sorry, just too sensitive.

I have been on this site for over six years now. I have been reading Daryl's posts for the last several weeks. I cannot think of one where he has not taken a swipe at Hunters. Do not get me wrong. I did not buy a Hunter thinking it was the best boat on the market. Nor even the best boat for the money. I wanted a cutter that I could afford. A boat with good traditional lines, one large enough not to scare the bejeebers out of my First Mate in a Lake Erie storm I know I am being overly sensitive but why can't people share their knowledge without being bitter and negative?

I'm Working With a Broker Now

I've looked at Sabre, Pacific Seacraft, and Valiants but will likely buy a Tartan during the next few months. Thanks for asking

Hijacked post...

Now that this post has converted from Foss Rudders to former Hunter owners, I'll chime in... Sold my 30 last summer BIGGEST mistake I've made in sailing. I believe that the Hunters built between 1974 and 82 were some of the best built boats for the dollar. This will be proven to be true in about 20 more years when they are realy classic plastic. Foss foam

Delt with them for 25 years or so. had one problem with a new rudder, they replaced it with a new one in a few days. these guys better watch out what they buy. Foss foam has made rudders for almost everybody in the bussiness. You see making rudders is no easy task, Special tooling and foaming equipment and a great skill are just some of the challenges. look at foss foams site and see who buys the products they make, It is quite revealing.

Foss Issues

Had a friend buy Foss Foam Rudder from California for an Ericson. It was much better built than the stuff I've seem from Florida and the price was cheaper (including shipping to the east coast). My first new Foss rudder looked bad upon arrival and I got excuses from them about their mold being old. Obviously they have no quality control or inspection prior to customer shipping. My second rudder looked better but was damaged in shipping. Their packaging was a joke. Fix your old one whenever it's possible.

Daryl of USA...

Had a Pacific Seacraft before I bought my Hunter. Great boat but I like my Hunter much better all things considered. More room, sails better and less money. Bow sprit on the Seacraft rotted away and had to be replaced at great expense. Way more cost than a Foss foam rudder on the Hunter. I personally have had good response from Foss Foam and have no issues with them. If the rudder problem was the reason you don't particularly care for Hunter you may want to check and see if they make the rudder for the Tartan. If so, you may want to reconsider your choice if that's the case. Hope you find the boat of your dreams, keep us informed on how your search goes. Tom Hadoulias S/V Lite Chop H37C
