I recently bought a Hunter 40 (1987) The forward holding tank must be forward under the V berth, as that is where the hoses lead, however there seems to be no deck fitting, and no access to the valves. Does anyone know anything more about this, and has anyone solved the problem of the aft holding tank being too small (13 gal)?

Know were to look

The deck fitting for the front tank is in the anchor locker and go down to the top of the tank in front of the V berth behind the front inspection pannel on my H-48 1986. The hoses run from the head against the starbord wall under the V berth and come out in the middle of the V berth. My tank has a manual pump over hose on it all so. As for the rear tank ,live with it or add a new tank under a locker. I have owned my H-40 for 5 years and have taken most thing apart and put back together. If you need to find a part or advice send E mail to me at joseph.english3@verivon.net Good luck. Joe

Plan B:

Install a Lectra/San and not ever have to worry about tank capacity again. There's only one "no discharge" zone on the whole Bay--Herring Bay. The discharge of treated waste from CG certified Type I MSD is legal everywhere else...in fact, just about everywhere else on the whole east coast between RI and the FL Keys. A number of people have installed Lectra/Sans and love 'em. You'll find all the specs--even the complete manual for it--here: http://www.raritaneng.com/products/waste_treatment/lectrasan.html Your toilets are most likely too far apart to connect both a single L/S...it has to be within 6' of both toilets. So your best option will be put it on the most used toilet, keep the tank on the other one to use only if/when you should ever visit a "no discharge" harbor or marina.

19 gal holding tank

Ronco tank now has a 19 1/2 gal tank that fits in the locker on the port side where the 11 gal tank is installed on the later model 40's. Thanks to Carl and a lot of work. Carl and I have recieved our tank just last week. Sorry Peggy but there are several marinas in NC that have a closed tank policy in effect presently and there are more coming. I like the ElectaSan system but I think the do gooders are going to win in the long run. Vinnt

It's about impossible to get away with NO tank...

'Cuz there are a bunch of ND small harbors and marinas. But unless you spend more time sitting at the dock than out sailing, short-sighted marina policy shouldn't rule out a Lectra/San. ND makes no sense anyway, The misconception behind ND is that it affects ALL boats...assumes that they're all flushing overboard. But in reality, the only boats it impacts are the 5% or so who have or would spend the money to install a treatment device...the remaining 95% should have already have a holding tank. If a marina or law enforcement can't successfully enforce a policy that already requires 95% of boats to use a tank, how do they expect to enforce a new law or policy requiring the remaining 5% to use a tank instead of their treatment device too?

Thanks-- Size of fwd tank? Autopilot?

Thanks guys-- the info is very helpful-- Has anyone used the Saltwater injector? I would need this as the water in Middle River is almost fresh. What is the capacity of the forward tank? Has anyone installed a Raymarine wheel pilot on this boat? is it adequate? It seems to be right on the edge of the displacement limit.

In the Bay, you'd need to add salt.

That can be done by adding the right salt tank for your toilet, or by simply adding 2 tablespoons (1 coffee measure) of table salt manually to each flush.
