Forward hatch leak

I had a leak in my forward hatch and the source seemed to be in the area near the hinges. When I pulled the hatch off I discovered that the screws holding the aft portion (or the hinged side) of the hatch just spun. It appears that the decking material may have been compromised and weakened and now I don't have a good way to reseat the screws and snug down the hatch. I thought of putting a stainless steel strip on the cabin roof and bolting it from the top all the way through this strip. I would then "finish it" with stainless acorn nuts. Anyone have any better ideas or have experience with this type of problem?

Brian, if it were my boat and the area seemed ...

compromised I think I would pull up the hatch and make sure the rough opening area around the hatch frame was solid material. It may mean replacing and/or rebuilding that area, but I would feel better knowing that I did it right. Terry
