I just purchased a '89 Sabre 36 powered by the original Westerbeke with 1800 hours... not sure of transmission/shaft vintage or historical work done. Runs great but recently will only engage forward gear when RPM's revved versus at idle. Thoughts- shaft, transmission issues to come? Adjustment?

Have you checked the transmission fluid? It could be time for a rebuild.
I don' t normally send people t other forums for advice, except you now own a great boat. I have a 362. The folks on the Sabre email list are quite knowledgeable about both Sabres and Westerbekes. If you are not a member, joining would be a wise move. Admission is free.
