Looking for place to launch and stay in this area for 4 days, and I wonder if anyone has visited recently. Your thoughts and places of interest would be appreciated.

Hey there. I live in Fort Walton Beach but I haven't sailed here too much. A couple of places I would look into are:
Rocky Bayou State Park. There is a boat ramp here plus you can get a camp site. However, there is a low bridge that you would have to lower your mast to get under. But I think it would be a nice quiet anchorage.

Crab Island. This is where the local boaters and tourists go to party on the weekends. It is a sandbar just north of the Destin bridge and people anchor their boats and walk around--probably about 2-3 feet of water. If you are looking for a quiet spot, you don't want to go there.

Norriega Point. Another popular anchoring spot right at the mouth of the Destin Harbor. Very deep water. High traffic.

Destin Harbor. A popular place to anchor out.

Spectre Island. Very nice small island where a few people go to camp. Just google map Hurlburt Field and you'll see the small islands right across from the runway.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. If you want to be around people, music, food then Destin Harbor is the place. If you want solitude and quiet then you'll want Spectre Island, Rocky Bayou, etc. Give me a little more info (is it just you or family, ages, interests, etc) and I'll see if I can help you out. Or just ping me via email duckandsock at cox dot net
