I had similar thoughts about the origin, sounds like snake oil or an "AS ADVERTISED on TV." However, digging into the website I found that Forj is a division of Yale Cordage. That lends some credibility to their claims and product. That stuff looks very interesting and probably has some great uses on a boat. The web site does sound a bit like snake oil though, not too surprising considering the intended market. I don't know what the matrix is but the fiber is UHMWPE which is great stuff, although not "as strong as steel". There are examples on the web site, like making a shackle, which I would take with a grain of salt. Still, probably a great material to keep on hand for quick repairs.
Let us know if you find some uses for it.
They may look the same in the ads, however, self-amalgamating tapes are different from the Forj. The Forj, is a thermosetting plastic and is more akin to a FRP laminate than a silicon based tape. It requires a heat source to set the plastic.I think this is similar 1 in. x 10 ft. Self-Bonding Super Tape.
I had a leak in my exhaust host and since it was late in the evening and we were leaving on a trip , I tried it out and it actually worked so great I hesitated a little to replace it after the trip. Not sure I would use it for anything other than a temporary repair on a leaky hose.
