Good afternoon! I'm considering purchasing a roller furling for my Hunter 285, and recently asked for advise on which model people recomend. Several people responded that they have replaced their original 1/4 inch foredstay with either 6mm or 7/32. My question. Will this cause problems? Is 1/4" overkill, or was it required? Thanx, Rene Schmidt H285 "Mai-Tai"

depends . . .

I have installed a Hood furler, and you don't have to cut or modify the forestay at all. That's one of the advantages of the Hood system, but there are also disadvantages. Most other systems that I researched said nothing about replacing the stay, only that it would need to be cut and re-swaged. But I'm not a rigger, and my only experience is with the Hood furler, so maybe other HOWies will check in about other systems.
