Forestay question

Catalina Capri-22 So Benson Marina
I lost the clevis pin for my Catalina Capri 22 while decommissioning last year. The closest I can find that seems to fit correctly is a 1/4 inch one, but that will be a little loose on the bowsprit fitting. Is that bad? Should I continue to search?

Thanks for the help!

It would depend more on the fitting on your forestay . What size is that fitting ? I wouldn't be comfortable with a pin having that much slop .
Too much play may well result in shock loads that lead to breakage . Where have you looked for a replacement pin ?

Do you have a photo of the forestay and the toggle on the turnbuckle?

Shock loading the smaller pin is an issue, however there is a more insidious problem excessive wear. The more the metal in the clevis pin wears against the forestay the more quickly it will erode the metal in the pin, weakening the pin. The closer the pin is to the size of the hole, the contact area is increased. This spreads the load to a larger area and reduces point loading and wear.

Looking at that image, I would be very unhappy using that pin. As others have said, what about the other side it has to go through?

If you are forced to use that size pin due to the fitting side, I would make a spacer that would fit in that hole and make that pin have a much tighter fit. This is not an area where you want "sloppy" fittings..

Not a great fit. For a replacement, try Rig-Rite, Rigging Only and Defender Marine. All local to Ct.
Or, call Catalina, they probably can help you get the correct size.

But ... just to be clear ... you can use that pin temporarily while you hunt for a better replacement. The boat will not suddenly implode or anything. Just keep an eye on it and don't let it go too long without replacing. But, a few casual day sails while you find the right pin won't hurt anything.

You had no luck matching that lost pin from those sources? That is very discouraging.

What size are you looking for? It looks like 3/8" or 10mm.
