My boat Slapshot is a 1998 H240. Friday afternoon I got a call from my marina saying my mast was down. Sure enough I drive down to the marina and find the forestay failed at the top of the rig I think where it is swaged into the goose neck fiting to the mast. Luckily it didn't happen while sailing or while somebody was on the boat or on the dock. Because of the side struts it fell straight back, even with a strong wind across the beam and no major damage was done. I had checked all hardware at the top of the mast in spring and everything looked good to me. Maybe the lifespan is 10 years for rigging and now has me concerned of the side shrouds. Anybody else ever have this happen? Also, what is the best place to get a new forestay?

not personally -can happen easily!

Hi, A friend on a 260 had it happen while sailing. There is supposed to be a rubber "stopper" that holds the fitting into the mast slot. I know mine is long gone. I've started using electrical tape to hold the fitting in place (after a pop out during the mast raising process.

Did yours somehow pop out or did it tear through the mast aluminum?

I'm on a 98 240 as well.

Re: not personally -can happen easily!

I am not familiar with the 240, but on the 23 the top of the forestay (which is 5/32 on the 23) a marine eye is attached to the wire - could be swgaed on, could be a removable eye like a Sta-Lok. Did the eye (or maybe it is a toggle?) pull out of the wire itself, or did something that attaches to the mast, or the mast fitting, fail?

If all you need is a new stay with standard fittings attached, places like Pyachts.com (and others) can sell you the wire and also the fittings swaged on, or you can buy the fittings you attach yourself. If you have roller furling, may be more complex as the connectors may have to be on the wire before both fittings are attached.

The actual wire separated/tore, I think at the point it enters the fitting. It did not tear out of the mast. I will probably buy a whole new stay.

Check Seco South. They probably have the measurements for your Hunter. They made most of the OEM rigging for Hunter. I do not know if they made them for the smaller boats.
