Forestay and Backstay

Would someone know the measurements of Forestay and Backstay for a H33' 82 ?
I have the mast down ( thanks to Ike) and have figured out the measurements for all the other cables (3 on each side, from the chainplates) right up to the top.
But I cannot work out the measurements of the 2 cables as mentioned.
Not related, but here is another question: under the sliding cover that goes over the engine (navigation table?) there appears to have had some kind of foam, covered in silver foil, I assume to deaden the engine, or insution for it: where does one buy such a thing?
Slowly but surely, things are looking up... when I figure out how to post photos here, I will show other members how much I have done
Have spent all night going through old questions/answers, and am learning a lot.
My predecessor Vasco da Gama would roll in his grave if he heard how little I know; but my desire to learn is phenomenal!

If you have the mast down I would just take the rigging into the store your dealing with and they will measure and cut to size. If you didn't have any room left on the turnbuckles I would let them know so they can shorten the cables. It's much easier to do that than try to measure a 50' plus cable IMHO.

About the rigging. Are we to assume that you have none of the old fore and back stays to measure? And how do you plan to buy the new ones? If you are going to have a rigging shop make them then you will need exact measurements. If you do one end yourself then you can buy something close but longer then needed. You can cut it to the exact length once the mast is up. Then you will add your own bottom terminal ends like Norseman or Sta-Lok(http://www.riggingonly.com/Norsemanmechanicalterminal.htm).

There are three ways to get a length that is close: 1) Someone with an H33 will post them. 2) You can wait until the mast is up(you will need to use halyards as temporary stays).

Or 3), you can calculate with a little trigonometry. You can get two sides of the triangle: mast base to top(a) and distance from mast step on deck to chainplate(b). Then the stay(c) is c-squared = b-squared +a-squared. So if 'a'(mast) is 40 and 'b'(mast to stern) is 20 then 'c' is 44.72, the length of the backstay for example. You can use the trig functions in Excel for easy calculations: =SQRT((40*40)+(20*20)).

Yes, the bottom of the hatch over the engine should have soundproof foam attached. The entire engine compartment should be lined as seen in this illustration: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|311|302333&id=95982 .
Thank you Ed for your help
No, all I have is the 2 cabbles at the stern, up to the point where they join with a triangle .
I do not have the rest of the cable to the mast
As for the forestay, I have nothing
I hope someone will see this and supply the size...I do't know what goes on either end, either.
I have been reading all the old postings, and have learned a lot!
Appreciate all the help,as a portuguese cook, wish I could cook a great meal to all you good people out there coming to the rescue
Thank you!

Hi Jorge
Interesting to see your post and the coincidences
I am brazilian and would take you up in an instant on the homecooked portuguese meal!!
Anyway, I have a 1982 Hunter Cherubini 33. It seems to be either an 81 or an 82. And somewhere I have the measurements, possibly with a picture from the original owners manual. please send me your email and I will send you what I have, once I find it. I have replaced the forestay and the backstay tang.
cheers
Bob

Thanks Bob for your repply
Also please send me a picture of what goes on each end
If you have the measurement of the cable from the end of the boom to the top of the mast, even better

I was not kidding about the food: I once owned a restaurant that was voted best ethnic in Houston; got tired of cooking for un-appreciative people. made great friends though!

Hello Bob,
Please let me have those measurements if you have them
Have you been doing all your sailing in your Hunter 33?
Jorge
