Foresail furler home made question

Got a sailboat. It has a furler that's home made. The pink line was wrapped around the drum a few turns with a shackle on top. Is this where the front corner of the sail connects? We replaced the frayed line and attached the sail there. It worked but the sail was scalloping a lot while raised. Maybe we didn't raise it enough. But as we pulled up to the raise the sail, the furler came apart. This boat was once owned by BudGates.

It looks like the correct spot (although incorrect fitting - should be a shackle) to connect the tack of the sail to the furler.

How does the sail attach to the forestay (or does it)? Usually the luff of the sail slides into a slot in a foil. If the sail is scalloped it sounds like it’s not attached? That would be tough to manage.

This home made system by a previous owner uses a spinning tube where the sail is attached at the front bottom with hanks on rings. The rings are on the tube and slide up as you raise the sail. The furler still furls the sail once raised on hanks. The advantage here is the sail is removable easily.

Sounds like a similar luff arrangement to a regular hanked on sail then. You’ll just need more halyard tension to get the scallops out. Somehow the furler might need to be reinforced to hold up to the extra tension if it isn’t already.

Yeah that's what's happening. Scallops and raising it makes the furler pop apart.
