Fore sheet winchs - fixing size

Hi

anybody ever remove one of the fore sheet winches? I guess you need to
make a special tool (or grow a four foot forearm) What size are the
nuts? and are the bolts short enough to get a socket on the nut? Any
suggestions gladly accepted.

Hi George

Easy enough to take apart. Remove the top the the winch first (dont lose
any bits!). You can reach the nuts with a socket and an extension, cant
remember actual size but start at 12 or 13mm

Hi Paul,

I know how to take it apart (because I did something dim and it got
pulled off). I guess from your reply you either have the 4 foot
forearm or have put a small person in the locker).

I've taken some pics (blind and in the dark, of course) and it seems
there is to much bolt protuding to get a socket on the nut.

I realy need to know the size of the nuts! anyone?

George,
Snap a pair of vice grips on the nuts and remove the screws from the
top. Empty the locker first, before you crawl in, and make sure you
tell someone in case you get stuck!

I have several pairs of vice grips (make sure they're metric ;-) so
can do several fastenings with only one visit into the locker.

Hi Peter,

clearly you have never seen me in the flesh (not a pretty sight). I'm
afraid it is some years since I could fit into that locker.

As the chap fitting me for a suit once advised, "double breasted for
the portly gentleman" - and that's before I got fat!

If I knew the size of the nuts, I could weld a bit of rod onto a box
spanner, and would only need 3 or 4 hours of aimless waving about and
swearing and it'd be golden.

Aw come on guys, somebody must know!

George,
Portly is good, too!
To the best of my recollection the nuts are 11 mm, on my Series I
Vega. The heads are a slotted type. I've seen some Vegas with
different bolts ... not sure what they were.
Hope this helps.

Ooops ... 11 mmm are the hull/deck joint nuts. I'll check the winch
bolts tomorrow and get back to you.

I don't know the nut size but you can always use deep socket nuts, which will accomodate the long bolt.Nicholas Walsh

George,
I checked my sheet winch nut size: 10mm
picture at

The bolts are quite long as the fiberglass is very thick in this
spot.
