Maine Sail,

I've followed your polishing instructions and my topsides as well as my deck are like new. Thank you. I recently relocated the vinyl name of my boat farther aft and noticed that the area where the name had been for many years was whiter than the rest of the hull. I purchased the on-off and followed the instructions and the result was that the off white color (yellowish) remained the same. I carefully cleaned and acetoned a small area and reapplied the on-off with the same results. Any ideas...

I may be able to help here. That color difference is likely faded gelcoat and nothing but time in the sun will help that. Polishing it will only get you so far but is really the best you can do until the area has had time to even up from the UV exposure. Be patient, it will fade.

I've had this problem in the past and had some success in using a fairly aggressive rubbing compound (followed by waxing), or wet sanding using 400/800/1500 grit emory paper, and then waxing.
