I have a leak in the fresh water pump, does anyone know where I can
purchase another? Is it a standard pump I can get a West Marine?

Yes, you can get them at West Marine (SKU 135137) or
Defender, or just about anywhere. It's the Whale
Gusher MKIII Cabinet-Mount Foot Pump ($US79.99).

I'm getting ready to do the plumbing on my Vega, lines
and pumps.

If your leak is coming from the pump diaphragm(and is the same
construction and the pumps in the Albin 25) it can be repaired.
A new diaphragm can be made from a piece of truck inner tube. Cut it
slightly oversize and trim it after the pump is reassembled.
I only use my on board water tank for washing up, not cooking or drinking.

Good luck.

Dear Tim,

I never knew that those pumps could be repaired by a simple peice of
truck inner tube.

Í replaced mine some 5 years ago. In those days we still had windet
in The Netherlands, and during a frosty period the pump froze to pieces.
It was quite simple to purchase another pump.

The rubber hose running from the forward water tank to the galley pump
is eternally causing troubles.
I have to replace it every season because the rubber collects all sorts
of nasty bacteria, in spite of a drinkable desinfactant which I add to
the fresh water .

Since years we have a 10 gallon fresh water tank in our Vega for
drinking purposes.

My Vega, #1868, has two foot-pumps for the galley sink: fresh water and salt
water. The fresh water galley pump cracked open a couple years ago. I
replaced it with one from West Marine. Although identical, the hold-down
bolt pattern is a bit different. If you have both, salt - and fresh water
pumps under the sink, you have to be a contortionist to accomplish the
replacement, but it can be done.

As for yuckies growing in the hoses, I believe it pays to flush the fresh
water tank with about 1/2 gallon of ordinary Clorox bleach and several
gallons of fresh water in the spring. If you do this, be sure to use plenty
of fresh water to clear the Clorox out of the lines and pump before using. I
used to work at Electric Boat Shipyard building submarines. This is the
method used for flushing potable water tanks.

Even still, I carry a separate container of fresh water for drinking, and use
the on-board tank for wash-up as somebody else mentioned.

Good Luck...............Ed

Hi Henk,

I had the same thing happen to my pump the first winter I had my
boat. Neglected to get anti-freeze all the way through the pump and it
split apart.
The 25s were built in Kristineham, Sweden, which is on a large
lake. On the 25s we have 2 pumps, one for fresh water and the other for
"outside water". Some of us have had problems with the fitting at the tank
cracking and have repaired it with epoxy. Others have used thru hull
fittings to replace the broken barb.

Even after replacing the hose I still find the water off flavored
even after flushing with water and chlorine bleach. I carry 2 or 3 2.5
gallon spring water containers purchased from the supermarket when I go
cruising.

Is it worth mentioning that Whale market a Service Kit for this pump which contains all diaphragms, seals valves etc?
The pumps fitted to most Vagas would appear to be the Mk.2, (this was superseded in 1984). If the main body is held together by through bolts rather that screws from each side it is a Mk. 2. The kit reference is AK0502 and the UK fax number for Whale is 0289 146 6421 (don't know the phone).
