Was out this morning finishing up the boat. Getting ready to leave Wed. morning. You know the usual stuff. Change oil, check all the belts and hoses. Anyway I cranked the engine to warm it up for the oil change. Change the oil, and crawled around sort of down under the cockpit floor. Looking, checking, etc. So, I go to crank the engine back up, and zip. I mean NADA. The panel is dead, start switch is dead. Now I know there is something I knocked off, and my first thought is a ground wire. First I take a casual look through the inspection port. Checked the harness plugs, visually, and don't see anything. An hour later, I am going checking towards the panel, with a volt meter, looking for a bad or broken connection, that I managed to knock off. To finish out the story, I bumped the harness connector at the engine, and if came apart. What I had done was to knock it basically loose, but it didn't come totally apart. And I just made a cursory visual of it, and it looked plugged up, and I assumed it was. I know that on more than one occasion I have told others on this board to check the simple stuff first, and also to use some logic. So now, I just need to learn to follow my own advice.

Yes, that will do it, but them simple things

never happen to us so we have to look first at serious possibilities. But the fact that it occurred at the dock prior to departure should have been a clue that this was a fly ball. Our types of failures usually occur at sea in foul weather.

Don't feel bad

Last year I had two electricians puzzling why the shore power didn't work. Turns out a life preserver had inadvertently switched the circuit breaker, which is practically hidden atop the insider starboard lazerette on H320.

I don't know how many time I've complicated the problem...

by intense trouble shooting, when I should have looked at the simple solutions first...I always feel like such a dummy afterwords.

Sounds like you might want to clamp it better

If it comes apart from inadvertently bumping, it must be a loose fit that should be corrected before that happens when you need the engine most.
