Follow-up Q: about H31' mast compression problem

I recently posted a message about a mast compression problem on a 1985 Hunter 31'. I really appreciated the responses about the estimated cost to repair it, $2000 - 4000, but can the boat safely be sailed around the bay with this problem that was discovered just a few months ago, or is it totally unsafe?Thanx Again,Darline

Though I don't think you said exactly what the problem was.Compression post failure can (will) lead to rig faiure. This will happen at the worst time - not at the dock, on a windy day. You may then have to cut the mast free - losing the mast - to avoid putting a whole in the hull.Or you could punch a whole in the cabin roof. This would probably also do considerable damage to the salon.Have it fixed. (Get more than 1 estimate)

Along with the compression post, there is the cross member in the salon roof to consider. Is it being deformed as the compression post collapses?

same problem

I recently posted my own compression whoas. Initially I was quoted 7600-7800.00 for bulkhead replacement and post replacement(7200 labor and 450.00 materials. At the suggestion of reliable source I got a 2nd opinion @a Brewers Yard for 5200.00 including pickup and return of my boat to its slip. I'll keep you posted as to the results. My suggestion is get 2nd opinion and then do it now. You will sleep more soundly with the added peace of mind.

We waited to do repair...

We bought our boat knowing it needed this repair. We had a TRUSTED fiberglass repair guy inspect it to see if we could sail one season and then do the repair the following winter. On our boat the only damage was to the cross member NOT to the post itself. Our fiber glass guy said that if we did not adjust the rig too tight we could wait out the season. We really wanted to make sure we liked the boat before investing in the repair.  Well, we sailed all last year, loved the boat, and had the repair done this winter. What we discovered was that now that the rig can be optimally tuned, the boat sails like a million bucks. Much improved performance in both light and heavy air. In fact, we can't believe the difference. We also took advantage of the mast being down to rewire and to replace the anchor light and VHF whip.
