Thanks to your responses on my original post, I understood my 40 year old curler might be repairable. One we got the mast down, my rigger agreed that it could repair it if he could recover the connecting piece that held the two extrusions together since both extrusions were undamaged. However, he was unable to recover the connector, so we ordered a new Harken UNIT 0 MKIV OCEAN FURLING SYSTEM. It is installed, and we will step the mast, tune it, and see how it works this Friday.
Although the new furler and installation is worth about half the value of our boat, we still anticipate a few more years on her, and she would be hard to sell with a botched furler.
